{"id":40193,"date":"2021-03-26T15:51:38","date_gmt":"2021-03-26T15:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/b04c3942-1309-45f7-9411-d2385a34ac1e"},"modified":"2021-03-26T15:51:38","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T15:51:38","slug":"sierra-wireless-partially-restores-network-following-ransomware-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/sierra-wireless-partially-restores-network-following-ransomware-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Sierra Wireless partially restores network following ransomware attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/hub\/i\/r\/2020\/12\/18\/377018e3-317d-41b5-b1e4-c365d5b8f2d6\/thumbnail\/770x578\/dfb0d3235bee556f4f12f87540ff14d5\/istock-8437791281.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Sierra Wireless, the multinational manufacturer of Internet of Things devices, has resumed production after being hit by a ransomware attack.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian company became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/ransomware-attack-halts-production-at-iot-maker-sierra-wireless\/\">victim of a ransomware attack against its IT systems on March 20<\/a>, disrupting internal operations and production facilities.<\/p>\n<p>But now Sierra Wireless has restored production at its manufacturing sites and is working towards restoring internal networks.<\/p>\n<p>The company has been working with cybersecurity law firm Blake, Cassels and Graydon LLP and cybersecurity investigators from KMPG in response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/ransomware-an-executive-guide-to-one-of-the-biggest-menaces-on-the-web\/\">ransomware attack<\/a>, and to analyse what happened. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Security is a top priority, and Sierra Wireless is committed to taking all appropriate measures to ensure the highest integrity of all of our systems,&#8221; said Sam Cochrane, CFO at Sierra Wireless. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m proud of the efforts of our IT team and external advisors as they have mitigated the attack and made real progress in getting operations up and running,&#8221; Cochrane added.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>SEE:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/resource-library\/whitepapers\/iot-major-threats-and-security-tips-for-devices-free-pdf\/?ftag=CMG-01-10aaa1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\"><strong><strong>IoT: Major threats and security tips for devices (free PDF)<\/strong><\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<strong>(TechRepublic)<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>The impact of the attack was limited to internal Sierra Wireless systems, with customer-facing products unaffected by ransomware, because IT systems for internal operations and those for customer operations are separated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this point in its investigation of the ransomware attack, the company does not expect there to be any product security patches, or firmware or software updates required as a result of the attack,&#8221; the company said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20210326005090\/en\/Sierra-Wireless-Recovering-from-Ransomware-Attack-Announces-Resumption-of-Production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear when the remaining systems affected by the ransomware attack will be restored. At the time of writing, Sierra Wireless hasn&#8217;t disclosed what form of ransomware encrypted the network, or how the organisation ended up falling victim to the cyber attack.<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware continues to remain &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/largest-ransomware-demand-now-stands-at-30-million-as-crooks-get-bolder\/\">an issue for organisations across the world<\/a>&nbsp;and a recent report detailed it as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/ransomware-is-now-the-biggest-cybersecurity-concern-for-cisos\/\">the biggest cybersecurity
