This annoyed me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",button,mpu,\" data-sm=\",button,mpu,\" data-md=\",button,banner_plus,mpu\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2YF-Z@uSvDrkvSGoiBpntMwAAAE4&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=2&amp;c=2YF-Z@uSvDrkvSGoiBpntMwAAAE4&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D2%26raptor%3Dcondor%26pos%3Dtop%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Chief exec Liz Evans wrote in an email titled &#8220;Strictly private and confidential \u2013 Notice of security incident&#8221; sent to users yesterday:<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",button,mpu_plusplus,\" data-sm=\",button,mpu_plusplus,\" data-md=\",button,mpu_plusplus,\"> <noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YF-Z@uSvDrkvSGoiBpntMwAAAE4&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YF-Z@uSvDrkvSGoiBpntMwAAAE4&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt> <\/a> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p>Quite reasonably, customers quickly took to social media to ask where they could find &#8220;a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FatFace\/status\/1374373803338264581\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public statement<\/a> on your data breach,&#8221; why it had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FatFace\/status\/1374439189161242634\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">waited so long<\/a> to inform customers, why the mail was marked &#8220;confidential&#8221; and whether it was genuine. All were directed to kindly &#8220;DM&#8221; the firm&#8217;s social media handler.<\/p>\n<p>It also noted that it would be giving recipients &#8220;access to a complimentary Experian Identity Plus membership&#8230; purely out of an abundance of caution and not because we consider your data specifically to be at risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It did not detail how many people had been affected. The firm has &#8220;200 stores across the UK and Ireland&#8221; \u2013 doing particularly well in seaside areas \u2013 and offers international shipping, although its website currently says this is unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>According to its most recent financials filed at Companies House, full accounts for the 52 weeks up to 30 May 2020 [<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk\/company\/02954734\/filing-history\/MzI5MTQyOTE2NGFkaXF6a2N4\/document?format=pdf&amp;download=0\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PDF<\/a>], the Group&#8217;s revenue dropped to \u00a3198.2m from \u00a3236.4m in 2019, but noted that its online business had &#8220;doubled in the last five years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fatface obtained <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drapersonline.com\/news\/fat-face-chairman-lord-rose-to-step-down\">refinancing<\/a> last year to reduce its debts and said it had &#8220;seen the benefits of the staycation trend in our local market towns and holiday destination stores.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Also in the document, the org said it had firewalls in place and that it made &#8220;regular checks&#8230; on the security of our systems&#8221; and was &#8220;implementing Multi-Factor authentication (MFA),&#8221; which would be in place by 2020\/21.<\/p>\n<p>It also said: &#8220;We have commenced a programme of work to upgrade some of our older applications with a modern, cloud-based application with Phase 1 completed and a further phase scheduled for 2021,&#8221; adding that the &#8220;Group has also commenced a core system replacement project which will happen over the next 2 years. Phase 1 has been approved and delivery is underway.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We have asked Fatface how far along it is with this project. We also asked about the extent of the breach as well as its decision to ask customers whose data had potentially been accessed to keep their mouths shut about it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2017\/07\/21\/exam_hall_shutterstock.jpg?x=174&amp;amp;y=115&amp;amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"Exam hall full of desks\"><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"'Inhouse crt rigs to solve... book before ur exam' as firm claims 'some' of the content wasn't theirs\">NCC Group admits its training data was leaked online after folders full of CREST pentest certification exam notes posted to GitHub<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/08\/11\/ncc_group_crest_cheat_sheets\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Ironically, Fatface itself also noted in the financial results document that any &#8220;failure to react appropriately in the event of breach&#8230; could result in financial penalties or reputational damage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Neil Brown, a tech-savvy lawyer who runs <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decoded.legal\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decoded.legal<\/a>, told us: &#8220;An organisation, which may have failed to keep its customers\u2019 information private, asking those very customers to keep Fatface\u2019s information private?
