{"id":39690,"date":"2021-02-23T05:28:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T05:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4718926d-5b6c-4323-b0a0-fb2965a720a5"},"modified":"2021-02-23T05:28:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T05:28:00","slug":"transport-for-nsw-confirms-data-taken-in-accellion-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/transport-for-nsw-confirms-data-taken-in-accellion-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"Transport for NSW confirms data taken in Accellion breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/a\/hub\/i\/r\/2018\/07\/30\/568563c9-2afd-4497-8757-49a94341e6b8\/thumbnail\/770x578\/4cfe910505013f5bbbc10904f9dc96fc\/sydney-train-tfnsw.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) has confirmed being impacted by a cyber attack on a file transfer system owned by Accellion. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Accellion system was widely used to share and store files by organisations around the world, including Transport for NSW, the government entity said on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before the attack on Accellion servers was interrupted, some Transport for NSW information was taken,&#8221; it wrote.<\/p>\n<p>TfNSW said Cyber Security NSW is managing the state government investigation with the help of forensic specialists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are working closely with Cyber Security NSW to understand the impact of the breach, including to customer data,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>It said the breach was limited to Accellion servers and no other TfNSW systems have been affected, including those related to driver&#8217;s licence information or Opal data.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We recognise that data privacy is paramount and deeply regret that customers may be affected by this attack,&#8221; TfNSW said.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) in January said one of its servers was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/asic-reports-server-breached-via-accellion-vulnerability\/\">breached earlier in the month<\/a>&nbsp;in relation to Accellion software used by the agency to transfer files and attachments.<\/p>\n<p>Accellion was also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/reserve-bank-of-new-zealand-investigates-illegal-access-of-third-party-system\/\">used as the vector<\/a>&nbsp;to breach the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) earlier last month.<\/p>\n<p>Accellion recently announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/accellion-to-retire-product-at-the-heart-of-recent-hacks\/\">end-of-life for its FTA product<\/a> after the software has been abused in recent attacks to breach many companies and government agencies across the world since December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The NSW government is not new to breach notifications. In April 2020, Service NSW, the state government&#8217;s one-stop shop for service delivery,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/citizen-data-compromised-as-service-nsw-falls-victim-to-phishing-attack\/\">experienced a cyber attack<\/a>&nbsp;that compromised the information of 186,000 customers. Following a four-month investigation that began in April, Service NSW said it identified that 738GB of data, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/service-nsw-reveals-738gb-of-customer-data-was-stolen-during-email-breach\/\">comprised of 3.8 million documents<\/a>, was stolen from 47 staff email accounts.<\/p>\n<p>It was also revealed in September that information on thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/unknown-commercial-entity-blamed-for-nsw-drivers-licence-data-breach\/\">NSW driver&#8217;s licence-holders was breached<\/a>&nbsp;as a result of an AWS cloud
