{"id":39547,"date":"2021-02-11T15:08:26","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T15:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/32012\/PayPal-Fixed-A-Cross-Site-Scripting-Vulnerability.html"},"modified":"2021-02-11T15:08:26","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T15:08:26","slug":"paypal-fixed-a-cross-site-scripting-vulnerability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/paypal-fixed-a-cross-site-scripting-vulnerability\/","title":{"rendered":"PayPal Fixed A Cross Site Scripting Vulnerability"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2021\/02\/11\/e6b45111-ce57-4161-b84b-803810e4e114\/thumbnail\/770x578\/ba0196d8fcf1246bca9473b00c6ee270\/screenshot-2021-02-11-at-09-35-07.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>PayPal has resolved a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability found in the currency converter feature of user wallets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>First disclosed on February 19, 2020, by a bug bounty hunter who goes by the name &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hackerone.com\/cr33pb0y?type=user\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Cr33pb0y<\/a>&#8221; on HackerOne, the <a href=\"https:\/\/hackerone.com\/reports\/799881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">vulnerability<\/a> is described as a &#8220;reflected XSS and CSP bypass&#8221; issue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bug was found in the currency converter feature of PayPal wallets on the PayPal web domain. <\/p>\n<p>In a limited disclosure, published on February 10 &#8212; close to a year after the researcher reported the issue privately &#8212; PayPal said the bug existed in the currency conversion endpoint and was caused by a failure to properly sanitize user input.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>A weak URL parameter failed to clean up input which could allow threat actors to inject malicious JavaScript, HTML, or any other code &#8220;that the browser could execute,&#8221; according to the advisory.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>As a result, malicious payloads could trigger in the Document Object Model (DOM) of a browser page of a victim without their knowledge or consent.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Typically, reflected XSS attacks reflect scripts from a web source to a browser and may only require a victim to click on a malicious link to trigger. Payloads may be used to steal cookies, session tokens, or account information, or could be used as a step in wider attacks.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>Following the bug bounty hunter&#8217;s disclosure, PayPal has now implemented additional validation checks and sanitizer controls to control user input in the currency exchange feature and wipe out the bug. <\/p>\n<p>A CVE has not been assigned but the vulnerability has been categorized as medium-severity. The researcher was awarded $2,900 as a financial reward.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Last year, HackerOne <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackerone.com\/blog\/organizations-paid-hackers-235-million-these-10-vulnerabilities-one-year-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">published a list<\/a> of the most impactful and rewarded vulnerability types reported on the platform during 2020.
