{"id":39457,"date":"2021-02-05T20:31:39","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T20:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4ace0cf9-3fb0-41c1-bd43-c099f0b49b5d"},"modified":"2021-02-05T20:31:39","modified_gmt":"2021-02-05T20:31:39","slug":"webdev-tutorials-site-sitepoint-discloses-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/webdev-tutorials-site-sitepoint-discloses-data-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"Webdev tutorials site SitePoint discloses data breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"image image-original shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet4.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2021\/02\/05\/2a4a85ba-a0fc-494b-b6ca-f6b4c7442423\/sitepoint.jpg\" class alt=\"SitePoint\"><\/span><figcaption><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><span class=\"credit\"> Image: SitePoint, ZDNet, Florian Olivo <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>SitePoint, a website that provides access to a wealth of web development tutorials and books, has disclosed a security breach this week in emails sent to some of its users.<\/p>\n<p>The company has formally admitted to a breach after a hacker put up for sale a collection of one million SitePoint user details&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/data-breach-broker-selling-user-records-stolen-from-26-companies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">on a cybercrime forum in December 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a data breach notification this week, SitePoint confirmed an intrusion into its systems sometime last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this point, we believe the accessed information mainly relates to your name, email address, hashed password, username, and IP address,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n<p>SitePoint has now initiated a password reset on all accounts and is asking users to choose new ones that are at least ten characters long.<\/p>\n<p>The tutorials and books publisher believes that the stolen passwords are currently safe, as they have been hashed with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bcrypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">bcrypt algorithm<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salt_(cryptography)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">salted<\/a>, which should make cracking the password strings to its plaintext version a pretty lengthy process for the time being.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We recommend that you change passwords from any other websites that may be a duplicate of your SitePoint password, just as a precaution,&#8221; the company added.<\/p>\n<h3>The WayDev connection<\/h3>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>SitePoint said that based on current evidence, the breach occurred after the attackers gained access to &#8220;a third party tool [they] used to monitor [their] GitHub account.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This allowed access through our codebase into our systems. This tool has since been removed, all of our API keys rotated and passwords changed,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n<p>While SitePoint doesn&#8217;t mention this tool by name, it is most likely referring to a tool from Git analytics service Waydev, which disclosed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/hackers-stole-github-and-gitlab-oauth-tokens-from-git-analytics-firm-waydev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">security breach last summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This same tool was also used to breach&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/hacker-leaks-data-of-millions-of-teespring-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">custom apparel vendor Teespring<\/a>, whose data was also sold by the same hacker, in the same package, at the same time as the SitePoint data.<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
