They\u2019re the people behind the counter, in the call centers, in hospital ICUs, on the supermarket floor\u2014doing the critical work that makes the difference in feeding our families, caring for the sick, and driving the long-tail economy. Frontline workers account for over 80 percent of the global workforce\u2014two billion people worldwide. Yet because of high scale, rapid turnover, and fragmented processes, frontline workers often lack the tools to make their demanding jobs a little easier.<\/p>\n<p>We believe identity is at the center of digital transformation and the key to democratizing technology for the entire frontline workforce including managers, frontline workers, operations, and IT. This week at the <a href=\"https:\/\/nrfbigshow.nrf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Retail Federation (NRF) tradeshow<\/a>, we announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/blog\/?p=235575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">several new features for frontline workers<\/a>. Building on this announcement, I\u2019m excited to dive into&nbsp;<strong>three generally available Azure Active Directory features that empower frontline workers<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>1. Streamline common IT tasks with My Staff<\/h2>\n<p>Azure Active Directory provides the ability to delegate user management to frontline managers through the <a href=\"http:\/\/aka.ms\/mystaffadmindocs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My Staff portal<\/a>, helping save valuable time and reduce security risks. Accelerate onboarding with simplified authentication<\/h2>\n<p>My Staff also enables frontline managers to register their team members\u2019 phone numbers for <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/azure\/active-directory\/authentication\/howto-authentication-sms-signin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SMS sign-in<\/a>. In many verticals, frontline workers maintain a local username and password\u2014a cumbersome, expensive, and error-prone solution. When IT enables authentication using SMS sign-in, frontline workers can log in with <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/active-directory\/sso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">single sign-on (SSO)<\/a> for Microsoft Teams and other apps using just their phone number and a one-time passcode (OTP) sent via SMS. This makes signing in for frontline workers simple and secure, delivering quick access to the apps they need most.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-92537 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/front-line-2-1024x843.png\" alt=\"Showing SMS sign-in on two devices \" width=\"1024\" height=\"843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/front-line-2-1024x843.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/front-line-2-300x247.png 300w, https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/front-line-2-768x632.png 768w, https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/front-line-2.png 1033w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Figure 2: SMS sign-in<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Additional layers of <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/active-directory\/conditional-access\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conditional Access<\/a> enable you to control who is signing in using SMS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ycapgWnmU2M&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">allowing for a balance of security and ease of use.<br \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>3. Improve security for shared devices<\/h2>\n<p>Many companies use shared devices so frontline workers can do inventory management and point-of-sale transactions\u2014without the IT burden of provisioning and tracking individual devices. With <strong>shared device sign out<\/strong>, it\u2019s easy for a firstline worker to securely sign out of all apps and web browsers on any shared device before handing it back to a hub or passing it off to a teammate on the next shift.
