{"id":39013,"date":"2021-01-06T04:57:10","date_gmt":"2021-01-06T04:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/trump-administration-bans-eight-chinese-apps\/"},"modified":"2021-01-06T04:57:10","modified_gmt":"2021-01-06T04:57:10","slug":"trump-administration-bans-eight-chinese-apps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/trump-administration-bans-eight-chinese-apps\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump administration bans eight Chinese apps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>United States president Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning the use of eight Chinese apps, namely Alipay, CamScanner, QQ Wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate, WeChat Pay, and WPS Office.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/executive-order-addressing-threat-posed-applications-software-developed-controlled-chinese-companies\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">executive order<\/a> says the apps \u201cthreaten national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States\u201d because China can track users\u2019 devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChinese connected software applications can access and capture vast swaths of information from users, including sensitive personally identifiable information and private information,\u201d the order says. \u201cThis data collection threatens to provide the Government of the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with access to Americans\u2019 personal and proprietary information \u2014 which would permit China to track the locations of Federal employees and contractors and build dossiers of personal information.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2017\/06\/27\/superhero_team_shutterstock.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"Superhero team\"><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"PUBG, Alipay, Baidu and more exiled\">India bans a further 118 Chinese apps as physical and online tensions escalate<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/09\/03\/india_bans_chinese_apps\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This also happens to be the business model of Facebook, Google, Apple, and Twitter. And also of Parler, the social media network that has quickly been adopted by right-leaning folk who feel that other social networks don\u2019t appreciate their point of view.<\/p>\n<p>But we digress. The executive order says that the payment apps are part China\u2019s plan \u201cto use bulk data collection to advance China\u2019s economic and national security agenda.\u201d That agenda, the order says, is evident in the attacks on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/05\/09\/anthem_hack_indictments_china\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">health insurance giant Anthem<\/a> and the US government\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2017\/08\/25\/fbi_charge_chinese_suspect_us_office_of_personnel_mgmt_hack\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of Personnel Management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The order even leans on India\u2019s assessment that some Chinese apps phone home with users\u2019 personal data.<\/p>\n<p>The order prohibits \u201cany transaction by any person &#8230; with persons that develop or control the following Chinese connected software applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Banning the likes of CamScanner or SHAREit shouldn\u2019t be too hard: figuring out the IP addresses the talk to and preventing traffic reaching those destinations will not be beyond major ISPs.<\/p>\n<p>The payment apps are more problematic. While a wide range of banks and payments players will be told not to let money flow to the banned apps, it\u2019s possible to use stored value in an Alipay wallet to make payments that won\u2019t ever touch a bank or Card Network like Visa, MasterCard or American Express. And with transactions conducted using QR codes that may not leave a trace in US-based systems, preventing all use of the apps will prove difficult.<\/p>\n<p>As the ban takes effect 45 days from the
