suicidal thoughts, she said: &#8220;The overall impression is of a depressed and sometimes despairing man fearful for his future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" near total isolation without the protective factors which limited his risk at HMP Belmarsh, I am satisfied the procedures described by the US will not prevent Mr Assange from finding a way to commit hacking, theft and the disclosure of the identities of informants working for the US security agencies &#8211; disclosures that endangered their lives. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"32\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>In English law, that would be enough for him to be charged with a crime here &#8211; and so the route was open for Mr Assange to face trial for the same in the United States. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>But British extradition law also requires a judge to consider Mr Assange&#8217;s health. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"31.5\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>And it&#8217;s the effect of his possible detention in near-solitary confinement in a &#8220;supermax&#8221; prison that proved decisive. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"32.5\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>The US, in the judge&#8217;s conclusion, can&#8217;t stop a mentally unwell man taking his own life in those conditions. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"31.5\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>And so the legal requirement to treat Mr Assange humanely trumps the seriousness of the case that the judge acknowledges he should answer. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>When the US appeals &#8211; it&#8217;ll have to convince more senior judges otherwise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"css-18mjolk-ComponentWrapper e1xue1i80\">\n<figure data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"33\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>If convicted in the US, Mr Assange faces a possible penalty of up to 175 years in jail, his lawyers have said. However the US government said the sentence was more likely to be between four and six years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"33\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>Mr Assange faces an 18-count indictment from the US government, accusing him of conspiring to hack into US military databases to acquire sensitive secret information relating to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, which was then published on the Wikileaks website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>He says the information exposed abuses by the US military. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"32\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>But US prosecutors say the leaks of classified material endangered lives, and so the US sought his extradition from the UK.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"31.5\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>Extradition is the process under which one country can ask another to hand over a suspect to face trial.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"css-qozapo-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\">What reaction has there been?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" readability=\"32.5\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>Following the judgement, several politicians and organisations welcomed the news, although some expressed dismay that the ruling was made on health grounds:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"unordered-list-block\" class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<div class=\"css-1pzprxn-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi3\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he had instructed his foreign minister to offer political asylum to Mr Assange who &#8220;is a journalist and deserves a chance&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Good news Julian Assange&#8217;s extradition has been blocked,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DavidDavisMP\/status\/1346055816252715008?s=20\" class=\"css-yidnqd-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">UK Conservative MP David Davis on Twitter.<\/a> &#8220;Extradition treaties should not be used for political prosecutions&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Former UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jeremycorbyn\/status\/1346087862865944576?s=20\" class=\"css-yidnqd-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">called it<\/a> &#8220;good news&#8221; but said it was &#8220;alarming that the judge has accepted US government arguments threatening freedom of speech and freedom to publish&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"css-18mjolk-ComponentWrapper e1xue1i80\">\n<figure class=\"css-2y05cd-StyledFigure e34k3c20\">\n<div class=\"css-kwaqyc-StyledFigureContainer e34k3c22\"><span class=\"css-1xtcmof-Placeholder e16icw910\"><span><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Julian Assange supporters celebrate outside the Old Bailey court in central London, Britain, 04 January 2021.
