{"id":38939,"date":"2020-12-30T15:18:12","date_gmt":"2020-12-30T15:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/31889\/FBI-Pranksters-Are-Hijacking-Smart-Devices-To-Live-Stream-Swatting.html"},"modified":"2020-12-30T15:18:12","modified_gmt":"2020-12-30T15:18:12","slug":"fbi-pranksters-are-hijacking-smart-devices-to-live-stream-swatting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/fbi-pranksters-are-hijacking-smart-devices-to-live-stream-swatting\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI: Pranksters Are Hijacking Smart Devices To Live-Stream Swatting"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"image image-original shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/12\/29\/bb657d10-c205-4916-a90c-d2656d0dea93\/swat.jpg\" class alt=\"SWAT team\"><\/span><figcaption><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><span class=\"credit\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mhrono\/9689437594\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Image via matthrono (Flickr\/CC2.0)<\/a><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The US Federal Bureau of Investigation says pranksters are hijacking weakly-secured smart devices in order to live-stream swatting incidents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recently, offenders have been using victims&#8217; smart devices, including video and audio capable home surveillance devices, to carry out swatting attacks,&#8221; the FBI said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/Media\/Y2020\/PSA201229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">public service announcement<\/a>&nbsp;published today.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say pranksters are taking over devices on which owners created accounts but reused credentials that previously leaked online during data breaches at other companies.<\/p>\n<p>Pranksters then place calls to law enforcement and report a fake crime at the victims&#8217; residence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As law enforcement responds to the residence, the offender watches the live stream footage and engages with the responding police through the camera and speakers,&#8221; the FBI said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In some cases, the offender also live streams the incident on shared online community platforms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These types of incidents, called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swatting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">swatting<\/a>, have increased across the US in recent years and have even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/three-men-indicted-in-call-of-duty-linked-swatting-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">resulted in people&#8217;s deaths<\/a>&nbsp;through accidental shootings.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>The first known cases of a swatting incident being live-streamed online date back to the mid-2010s. The difference between what the FBI is reporting now and those initial incidents is that devices weren&#8217;t being hacked.<\/p>\n<p>Pranksters would identify social events that were being streamed online and would arrange the event to be swatted, such as weddings, church meetings, and more.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-original shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/fbi-pranksters-are-hijacking-smart-devices-to-live-stream-swatting-incidents\/\" class=\"lazy\" alt=\"livestream-fbi.png\" data-original=\"https:\/\/zdnet3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/12\/29\/91a6dbbd-4afc-4cc4-ba1f-be02661750e0\/livestream-fbi.png\"><\/span><noscript><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/12\/29\/91a6dbbd-4afc-4cc4-ba1f-be02661750e0\/livestream-fbi.png\" class alt=\"livestream-fbi.png\"><\/span><\/noscript><figcaption><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many of these swatting calls are being placed through online services that provide anonymous calling capabilities &#8212; such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flashpoint-intel.com\/blog\/phonecord-telephone-harassment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Discord bots<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/campuscodi\/status\/948303385731653632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">dark web services<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-source\"> <\/figure>\n<p>To counteract with this new rising hack&amp;swat cases, bureau officials said they are now working with device vendors to advise customers on how they could select better passwords for their devices.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the FBI said it&#8217;s also working to alert law enforcement first responders about this new swatting variation, so they may respond accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>As for device owners, the same advice remains valid:&nbsp;<strong>Use complex and unique passwords for each of your online accounts.
