It directs the state to study whether its use is appropriate in schools, and issue recommendations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakableTextP2\">New York is the first state to ban the tech&#8217;s use in public and private schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rachelsandler\/2020\/12\/22\/new-york-issues-first-in-nation-moratorium-on-facial-recognition-in-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Forbes noted<\/a>. of benefits to New Yorkers, but its use brings up serious and legitimate privacy concerns that we have to examine, especially in schools,&#8221; Cuomo said in a statement. &#8220;This legislation requires state education policymakers to take a step back, consult with experts and address privacy issues before determining whether any kind of biometric identifying technology can be brought into New York&#8217;s schools.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In June, the New York Civil Liberties Union <span class=\"link\" section=\"shortcodeLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/facial-recognition-lawsuit-targets-ny-schools-over-student-privacy\/\">sued the state education department<\/a><\/span> over its approval to install facial recognition for the <span class=\"link\" section=\"shortcodeLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/facial-recognition-tech-coming-to-new-york-school-district-next-week\/\">Lockport School District<\/a><\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cities <span class=\"link\" section=\"shortcodeLink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/san-francisco-becomes-first-city-to-bar-police-from-using-facial-recognition\/\">across the US<\/a><\/span> have banned government use of facial recognition, and
