The self-signed certificate caused traffic sent to and from select websites to be encrypted with a key controlled by the government. Under industry standards, HTTPS keys are supposed to be private and under the control only of the site operator.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/bugzilla.mozilla.org\/show_bug.cgi?id=1680927\">thread<\/a> on Mozilla\u2019s bug-reporting site first reported the certificate in use on December 6. The Censored Planet website later reported that the certificate <a href=\"https:\/\/censoredplanet.org\/kazakhstan\/live\">worked against dozens of Web services<\/a> that mostly belonged to Google, Facebook, and Twitter. Censored Planet identified the sites affected as:<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad_wrapper\" aria-label=\"In Content advertisement\"> <span class=\"ad_notice\">Advertisement <\/span> <\/aside>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>google.com<\/li>\n<li>youtube.com<\/li>\n<li>facebook.com<\/li>\n<li>vk.com<\/li>\n<li>instagram.com<\/li>\n<li>twitter.com<\/li>\n<li>mail.ru<\/li>\n<li>allo.google.com<\/li>\n<li>android.com<\/li>\n<li>cdninstagram.com<\/li>\n<li>dns.google.com<\/li>\n<li>docs.google.com<\/li>\n<li>encrypted.google.com<\/li>\n<li>goo.gl<\/li>\n<li>mail.google.com<\/li>\n<li>messages.android.com<\/li>\n<li>messenger.com<\/li>\n<li>news.google.com<\/li>\n<li>ok.ru<\/li>\n<li>picasa.google.com<\/li>\n<li>plus.google.com<\/li>\n<li>sites.google.com<\/li>\n<li>tamtam.chat<\/li>\n<li>translate.google.com<\/li>\n<li>video.google.com<\/li>\n<li>vk.me<\/li>\n<li>www.youtube.com<\/li>\n<li>www.messenger.com<\/li>\n<li>www.google.com<\/li>\n<li>www.facebook.com<\/li>\n<li>www.instagram.com<\/li>\n<li>groups.google.com<\/li>\n<li>hangouts.google.com<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead of sending traffic that could only be decrypted by the website and the individual end user, computers that had the certificate installed used a key that the Kazakhstan government could also use to decrypt the data in transit.<\/p>\n<p>This is at least the second time Kazakhstan\u2019s government has required some of its citizens to install the certificate, with the last time being in August 2019.
