{"id":38655,"date":"2020-12-11T20:31:07","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T20:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/814be4ab-f005-4394-abd7-3e59a3261f96"},"modified":"2020-12-11T20:31:07","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T20:31:07","slug":"zero-day-in-wordpress-smtp-plugin-abused-to-reset-admin-account-passwords","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/zero-day-in-wordpress-smtp-plugin-abused-to-reset-admin-account-passwords\/","title":{"rendered":"Zero-day in WordPress SMTP plugin abused to reset admin account passwords"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"image image-original shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2019\/03\/21\/8988e317-18c5-49dd-9d58-d6a690289793\/wp-smtp.png\" class alt=\"WordPress Easy WP SMTP\"><\/span><figcaption><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hackers are resetting passwords for admin accounts on WordPress sites using a zero-day vulnerability in a popular WordPress plugin installed on more than 500,000 sites.<\/p>\n<p>The zero-day was used in attacks over the past weeks and was patched on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>It impacts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/easy-wp-smtp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Easy WP SMTP<\/a>, a plugin that lets site owners configure the SMTP settings for their website&#8217;s outgoing emails.<\/p>\n<p>According to the team at Ninja Technologies Network (NinTechNet), Easy WP SMTP 1.4.2 and older versions of the plugin contain a feature that creates debug logs for all emails sent by the site, which it then stores in its installation folder.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The plugin&#8217;s folder doesn&#8217;t have any&nbsp;<em>index.html<\/em>&nbsp;file, hence, on servers that have directory listing enabled, hackers can find and view the log,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nintechnet.com\/wordpress-easy-wp-smtp-plugin-fixed-zero-day-vulnerability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">said NinTechNet&#8217;s Jerome Bruandet<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-original shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/zero-day-in-wordpress-smtp-plugin-abused-to-reset-admin-account-passwords\/\" class=\"lazy\" alt=\"easy-wp-smtp-zero-day-log.png\" data-original=\"https:\/\/zdnet4.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/12\/11\/7f1abd0f-185a-4acd-99f2-cde22e555fc9\/easy-wp-smtp-zero-day-log.png\"><\/span><noscript><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet4.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/12\/11\/7f1abd0f-185a-4acd-99f2-cde22e555fc9\/easy-wp-smtp-zero-day-log.png\" class alt=\"easy-wp-smtp-zero-day-log.png\"><\/span><\/noscript><figcaption><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><span class=\"credit\"> Image: NinTechNet <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bruandet says that on sites running vulnerable versions of this plugin, hackers have been carrying out automated attacks to identify the admin account and then initiate a password reset.<\/p>\n<p>Since a password reset involves sending an email with the password reset link to the admin account, this email is also recorded in the Easy WP SMTP debug log.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>All attackers have to do is access the debug log after the password reset, grab the reset link, and take over the site&#8217;s admin account.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-original shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/zero-day-in-wordpress-smtp-plugin-abused-to-reset-admin-account-passwords\/\" class=\"lazy\" alt=\"easy-wp-smtp-zero-day-password.png\" data-original=\"https:\/\/zdnet2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/12\/11\/9ce7c110-1088-44c0-9c44-71c7beb54973\/easy-wp-smtp-zero-day-password.png\"><\/span><noscript><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/12\/11\/9ce7c110-1088-44c0-9c44-71c7beb54973\/easy-wp-smtp-zero-day-password.png\" class alt=\"easy-wp-smtp-zero-day-password.png\"><\/span><\/noscript><figcaption><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><span class=\"credit\"> Image: NinTechNet <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;This vulnerability is currently exploited, make sure to update as soon as possible to the latest version,&#8221; Bruandet warned earlier this week on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The plugin&#8217;s developers have fixed this issue by moving the plugin&#8217;s debug log into the WordPress logs folder, where it&#8217;s better protected. The version where this bug was fixed is Easy WP SMTP 1.4.4, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/easy-wp-smtp\/#developers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">plugin&#8217;s changelog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This marks the second zero-day discovered in this very popular plugin. A first zero-day was discovered being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/zero-day-in-wordpress-smtp-plugin-abused-by-two-hacker-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abused in the wild in March 2019<\/a>, when hackers used a Easy WP SMTP vulnerability to enable user registration and then created backdoor admin accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that compared to March 2019, today, the WordPress CMS has received a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/wordpress-to-add-auto-update-feature-for-themes-and-plugins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">built-in auto-update function for themes and plugins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Added in August 2020, with the release of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/news\/2020\/08\/eckstine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">WordPress 5.5<\/a>, if enabled, this feature will allow plugins to always run on the latest version by updating themselves, instead of waiting for an admin&#8217;s button press.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is currently unclear how many WordPress sites have this feature enabled and how many of the 500,000+ WordPress sites are currently running the latest (patched) Easy WP SMTP version.<\/p>\n<p>According to WordPress.org stats, the number isn&#8217;t that high, meaning that many sites remain vulnerable to attacks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-original shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\"
