{"id":38441,"date":"2020-11-30T15:08:14","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T15:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d06f8aa4-0a37-4bd9-9588-6b96db20881d"},"modified":"2020-11-30T15:08:14","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T15:08:14","slug":"hackers-are-targeting-macos-users-with-this-updated-malware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/hackers-are-targeting-macos-users-with-this-updated-malware\/","title":{"rendered":"Hackers are targeting MacOS users with this updated malware"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2020\/07\/13\/be25cc9d-5026-4b2f-820d-b0b762b9ef01\/thumbnail\/770x578\/5e2c99e8858f004b8d81fc44879e676a\/phishing-sophisticated-email-campaign-ta-5f05a35be0a7442b5c9e482e-1-jul-13-2020-10-00-36-poster.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>A newly discovered form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/what-is-malware-everything-you-need-to-know-about-viruses-trojans-and-malicious-software\/\">malware<\/a> is targeting Apple MacOS users in a campaign which researchers say is tied to a nation-state backed hacking operation.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trendmicro.com\/en_us\/research\/20\/k\/new-macos-backdoor-connected-to-oceanlotus-surfaces.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">detailed by cybersecurity analysts at Trend Micro<\/a> who&#8217;ve linked it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/oceanlotus-revamps-public-exploit-code-to-abuse-microsoft-office-software\/\">OceanLotus<\/a> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/covid-19-cyber-espionage-saw-chinese-ministry-targeted-by-ocean-lotus-fireeye\/\">also known as APT32<\/a> \u2013 a hacking group which is thought to have links to the Vietnamese government.<\/p>\n<p>OceanLotus is known to target foreign organisations working in Vietnam including media, research and construction and while the motivation for this isn&#8217;t fully understood, the aim is thought to be to using espionage to aid Vietnamese-owned companies.<\/p>\n<p>The MacOS backdoor provides the attackers with a window into the compromised machine, enabling them to snoop on and steal confidential information and sensitive business documents.<\/p>\n<p>The security company&#8217;s researchers have linked it to OceanLotus because of the similarities in code and behaviour of the malware, compared with samples used in previous campaigns by the group.<\/p>\n<p>The attacks begin with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/what-is-phishing-how-to-protect-yourself-from-scam-emails-and-more\/\">phishing emails<\/a> which attempt to encourage victims to run a Zip file disguised as a Word document. By installing the malware across different stages like this OceanLotus aims to evade detection.<\/p>\n<p>Like older versions of the malware, this attack aims to collect system information and creates a backdoor allowing the hackers&nbsp;to snoop on and download files, as well as upload additional malicious software to the system if required. It&#8217;s thought that the malware is still actively being developed. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Threat groups such as OceanLotus are actively updating malware variants in attempts to evade detection and improve persistence,&#8221; wrote researchers. <\/p>\n<p>To help avoid falling victim to this and other malware campaigns, Trend Micro urges users to be cautious about clicking links or downloading attachments from emails coming from suspicious or unknown sources.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also recommended that organisations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/cybersecurity-how-to-get-your-software-patching-strategy-right-and-keep-the-hackers-at-bay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apply security patches<\/a>&nbsp;and other updates to software and operating systems so malware isn&#8217;t able to take advantage of known vulnerabilities which can be protected against.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE
