{"id":38254,"date":"2020-11-18T12:00:03","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T12:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bdb4d763-fe57-4d55-8296-a1f434ae4d99"},"modified":"2020-11-18T12:00:03","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T12:00:03","slug":"the-worst-passwords-of-2020-show-we-are-just-as-lazy-about-security-as-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/the-worst-passwords-of-2020-show-we-are-just-as-lazy-about-security-as-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"The worst passwords of 2020 show we are just as lazy about security as ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s that time of year again &#8212; when we see whether or not password security has improved over the past 12 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Going <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/how-to-avoid-the-500-worst-passwords-of-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">back to 2015<\/a>, the worst passwords still commonly used included &#8220;123456&#8221; and &#8220;password.&#8221; Fast forward five years, and these examples are still very much alive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After analyzing 275,699,516 passwords leaked during 2020 data breaches, NordPass and partners found that <a href=\"https:\/\/nordpass.com\/most-common-passwords-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">the most common passwords<\/a> are incredibly easy to guess &#8212; and it could take less than a second or two for attackers to break into accounts using these credentials. Only 44% of those recorded were considered &#8220;unique.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><strong>See also:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/nsa-publishes-list-of-top-25-vulnerabilities-currently-targeted-by-chinese-hackers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NSA publishes list of top vulnerabilities currently targeted by Chinese hackers<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the password manager solutions provider published its annual report on the state of password security, finding that the most popular options were &#8220;123456,&#8221; &#8220;123456789,&#8221; &#8220;picture1,&#8221; &#8220;password,&#8221; and &#8220;12345678.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>With the exception of &#8220;picture1,&#8221; which would take approximately three hours to decipher using a brute-force attack, each password would take seconds using either dictionary scripts &#8212; which compile common phrases and numerical combinations to try &#8212; or simple, human guesswork.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>As one of the entrants on the 200-strong list describes the state of affairs when it comes to password security, &#8220;whatever,&#8221; it seems many of us are still reluctant to use strong, difficult-to-crack passwords &#8212; and instead, we are going for options including &#8220;football,&#8221; &#8220;iloveyou,&#8221; &#8220;letmein,&#8221; and &#8220;pokemon.&#8221; <\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>The 10 most common passwords of 2020, based on NordPass&#8217; dataset, are listed below: <\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-original shortcode-image\"><span class=\"img aspect-set \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2020\/11\/16\/b0a93c42-cf58-4e4c-8398-3e8a0fbe98e5\/resize\/1200xauto\/c7419f693b9c1e2eb48fcd9fe4222a1b\/screenshot-2020-11-16-at-15-09-49.png\" class alt=\"screenshot-2020-11-16-at-15-09-49.png\" height=\"auto\" width=\"1200\"><\/span><figcaption><span class=\"caption\"><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>CNET:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/rules-for-strong-passwords-dont-work-researchers-find-heres-what-does\/?ftag=CMG-01-10aaa1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Rules for strong passwords don&#8217;t work, researchers find. Here&#8217;s what does<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When selecting a password, you should avoid patterns or repetitions, such as letters or numbers that are next to each other on a keyboard.
