Microsoft 365 Defender customers can also refer to these detections: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ieBj2dox78\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-component=\"externalLink\">https:\/\/t.co\/ieBj2dox78<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Microsoft Security Intelligence (@MsftSecIntel) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MsftSecIntel\/status\/1313246337153077250?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" data-component=\"externalLink\">October 5, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>MSTIC linked the attacks to a group of Iranian hackers that the company tracks as&nbsp;<strong>MERCURY<\/strong>, but who are more widely known under their monicker of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/malpedia.caad.fkie.fraunhofer.de\/actor\/muddywater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">MuddyWatter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The group is believed to be a contractor for the Iranian government working under orders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran&#8217;s primary intelligence and military service.<\/p>\n<p>According to Microsoft&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en\/security\/business\/security-intelligence-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Digital Defense Report<\/a>, this group has historically targeted NGOs, intergovernmental organizations, government humanitarian aid, and human rights organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, Microsoft says that Mercury&#8217;s most recent targets included &#8220;a high number of targets involved in work with refugees&#8221; and &#8220;network technology providers in the Middle East.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Attacks began after public Zerologon PoC<\/h3>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\"> <\/section>\n<p>Zerologon was described by many as the most dangerous bug disclosed this year. The bug is a vulnerability in Netlogon, the protocol used by Windows systems to authenticate against a Windows Server running as a domain controller.<\/p>\n<p>Exploiting the Zerologon bug can allow hackers to take over an unpatched domain controller, and inherently a company&#8217;s internal network.<\/p>\n<p>Attacks usually need to be carried out from internal networks, but if the domain controller is exposed online, they can also be carried out remotely over the internet.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft issued patches for Zerologon (<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.msrc.microsoft.com\/en-US\/security-guidance\/advisory\/CVE-2020-1472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">CVE-2020-1472<\/a>) in August, but the first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/zerologon-attack-lets-hackers-take-over-enterprise-networks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">detailed write-up<\/a>&nbsp;about this bug was published in September, delaying most of the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>But while security researchers delayed publishing details to give system administrators more time to patch, weaponized proof-of-concept code for Zerologon was published almost on the same day as the detailed write-up, spurring a wave of attacks within days.<\/p>\n<p>Following the bug&#8217;s disclosure,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/us-govt-orders-federal-agencies-to-patch-dangerous-zerologon-bug-by-monday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DHS gave federal agencies three days<\/a>&nbsp;to patch domain controllers or disconnect them from federal networks in order to prevent attacks, which the agency was expecting to come &#8212; and they did, days later.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-source\">\n<div class=\"twitterContainer\" readability=\"7.05\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"7.52\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Microsoft is actively tracking threat actor activity using exploits for the CVE-2020-1472 Netlogon EoP vulnerability, dubbed Zerologon.
