Haha, funny story about that, we didn&#8217;t mean it \u2013 Amazon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon today said an internal email banning its staff from using TikTok on smartphones connected to their corporate inboxes was sent in &#8220;error.&#8221; The admission \u2013 or climb down, depending on how skeptical you are \u2013 came after the memo was obtained and leaked by journalists.<\/p>\n<p>The internet giant&#8217;s IT department sent a note to some workers on Friday telling them to remove the Chinese video-sharing app from their mobile devices for security reasons, or lose access work emails from those devices, the New York Times <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/10\/technology\/tiktok-amazon-security-risk.html\">first reported<\/a>. TikTok, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, not only <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/videos\/comments\/fxgi06\/not_new_news_but_tbh_if_you_have_tiktiok_just_get\/fmuko1m\/\">collects<\/a> a lot of telemetry about your phone, we note, it is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/01\/02\/tiktok_us_army_ban\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">feared<\/a> the Chinese government can secretly subvert the stupidly popular software to spy on the West.<\/p>\n<p>After the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TaylorLorenz\/status\/1281632998509744129\">email<\/a> leaked, Amazon&#8217;s spinners responded with the slightly ambiguous statement: &#8220;This morning\u2019s email to some of our employees was sent in error. There is no change to our policies right now with regard to TikTok.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The cynical among you may be thinking TikTok was already banned from work mobile devices, and will stay banned, and that the &#8220;error&#8221; was to suggest the policy was new. However, the now-retracted morning memo stated TikTok &#8220;was no longer permitted on mobile devices&#8221; though it could still be used from a work laptop. So what Amazon&#8217;s trying to say now is that it was wrong to ban TikTok from mobile devices: its policy is that it&#8217;s OK to use the software on phones used for work email. A second message was sent to staff informing them of the situation.<\/p>\n<p>We also note Amazon Prime Video was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichLightShed\/status\/1281636351511867392\">advertising<\/a> on TikTok as recently as April, so perhaps someone got trigger happy in IT and marketing revolted as they would lose access to their portal to the world&#8217;s youth. Or perhaps Amazon did a 180 after the email leaked to avoid controversy. Or perhaps because it makes little sense to ban the application from phones but leave it on work PCs. Also, the policy hasn&#8217;t changed right now though it may do in the near future?<\/p>\n<p>Amazon declined to elaborate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2017\/08\/04\/shutterstock_tech_addiction.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"family glued to various devices... \"><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"A quarter? American soldiers were banned at the turn of the year from using TikTok after top brass branded it a &#8220;cyber threat.&#8221; The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/6169770370001#sp=show-clips\/primetime\">told<\/a> Fox News this week the Trump administration is \u201ccertainly looking\u201d at banning TikTok in the States, citing national security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Next, US bank Wells Fargo told its staff who installed TikTok on their work devices to remove the software for privacy and security reasons, The Information <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/for-tiktok-an-amazon-ban-that-wasnt-a-wells-fargo-ban-that-was\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, India&#8217;s army this week directed troops to remove 89 social media and dating apps from their cellphones, including TikTok and Facebook \u2013 though bear in mind, India <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/06\/29\/india_bans_chinese_apps\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outlawed<\/a> 59 Chinese apps last month, including TikTok. Chinese and Indian soldiers are clashing along the Line of Actual Control, a region that marks the borders of both countries, so that explains India&#8217;s decision to banish the Chinese software. But what about Facebook?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn view of the exponential increase in the number of cases being targeted by hostile intelligence agencies and existing vulnerabilities, the use of Facebook accounts by Army persons is banned,\u201d the Indian Army said, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatvnews.com\/news\/india\/indian-army-personnel-directed-to-delete-accounts-89-apps-social-media-sites-full-list-632667\">according<\/a> to India TV News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHence, the existing accounts are required to be deleted and not left deactivated.
