But Red Dead Online players had been inserting the characters into the multiplayer game world <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2019\/02\/gta-online-cheat-tool-maker-ordered-to-pay-150000\/\">through the use of mod menus<\/a>. These tools essentially take full control of the PC version of the game, doing anything from spawning infinite items to changing weather patterns for entire lobbies.<\/p>\n<p>Players using KKK spawning to grief and\/or terrorize other players has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RedDeadOnline\/comments\/gpwiia\/pc_hackers_just_spawned_kkk_on_me_because_my\/\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RedDeadOnline\/comments\/fh14pg\/rdodays_of_our_lives_hacker_spawns_kkk_npcs_in_my\/\">numerous<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RedDeadOnline\/comments\/h8aocd\/this_happened_a_few_hours_after_the_shutdown_the\/\">times<\/a> on Reddit and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RedDeadRDC\/status\/1271906437908889601\">other forums<\/a> in recent weeks. Screenshots also show hackers accompanying these spawns with racist invective broadcast to the game lobby by taking control of the &#8220;Rockstar message&#8221; channel.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, data miner Tez2 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TezFunz2\/status\/1272899050870800388\">said<\/a> this particular use of mod menu is now disabled thanks to a patch that instantly deletes the KKK character model as soon as its detected in an online game. Rockstar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/6\/16\/21292942\/red-dead-online-rockstar-mod-menu-peds-kkk-model-cheats-hacks-racism\">confirmed that removal<\/a> in a comment to Polygon.<\/p>\n<p>Rockstar has been stuck in <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2016\/10\/rockstar-clears-out-illegitimately-gained-gta-online-cash\/\">a long-standing<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/06\/gta-online-publisher-goes-after-paid-cheating-services\/\">battle with hackers<\/a> in its incredibly popular online games, which use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RedDeadOnline\/comments\/ed1kyt\/psa_rdo_is_still_p2p\/\">a simple P2P mesh network<\/a> that is <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2015\/05\/rockstar-to-gta-v-pc-players-we-dont-issue-bans-for-single-player-mods\/\">particularly susceptible to exploits<\/a>. That battle has included <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2018\/10\/fortnite-gta-v-hackers-face-legal-action-for-online-cheating\/\">legal action<\/a> against the makers of mod menus for <em>Grand Theft Auto Online<\/em>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2017\/06\/gta-online-publisher-goes-after-paid-cheating-services\/\">occasionally overzealous<\/a> threats against <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2017\/06\/grand-theft-auto-modding-project-folds-following-take-twos-demands\/\">makers of single-player mods<\/a> for the company&#8217;s games.<\/p>\n<p> Rockstar Games was <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gaming\/2020\/06\/game-companies-delay-events-tweet-blacklivesmatter-amid-police-brutality-protests\/\">among many game companies<\/a> to offer public support for the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The company shut down access to its online games for two hours earlier this month in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rockstargames\/status\/1268573285496823808\">a move the company said was to honor Floyd&#8217;s legacy<\/a>.
