{"id":35300,"date":"2020-06-01T16:07:05","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T16:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/31256\/FB-Employees-Revolt-Over-Zuckerbergs-Stance-On-Trump.html"},"modified":"2020-06-01T16:07:05","modified_gmt":"2020-06-01T16:07:05","slug":"fb-employees-revolt-over-zuckerbergs-stance-on-trump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/fb-employees-revolt-over-zuckerbergs-stance-on-trump\/","title":{"rendered":"FB Employees Revolt Over Zuckerberg&#8217;s Stance On Trump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.arstechnica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GettyImages-1177775686-800x527.jpg\" alt=\"A man in a suit looks nervously around a courtroom.\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.arstechnica.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/GettyImages-1177775686.jpg\" class=\"enlarge-link\" data-height=\"3662\" data-width=\"5563\">Enlarge<\/a> <span class=\"sep\">\/<\/span> Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook profile that he had been &#8220;struggling with how to respond&#8221; to Donald Trump\u2019s posts<\/div>\n<aside id=\"social-left\" class=\"social-left\" aria-label=\"Read the comments or share this article\">\n<h4 class=\"comment-count-before\"><a title=\"131 posters participating\" class=\"comment-count icon-comment-bubble-down\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2020\/06\/facebook-employees-revolt-over-zuckerbergs-stance-on-trump\/?comments=1\">reader comments<\/a><\/h4>\n<p><a title=\"131 posters participating\" class=\"comment-count icon-comment-bubble-down\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2020\/06\/facebook-employees-revolt-over-zuckerbergs-stance-on-trump\/?comments=1\"><span class=\"comment-count-number\">401<\/span> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">with 131 posters participating<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"share-links\">\n<h4>Share this story<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Mark Zuckerberg is facing a backlash from within Facebook after several senior employees publicly criticized the chief executive for refusing to take action over posts by President Donald Trump that Twitter censured last week for \u201cglorifying violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As protests and rioting over the death in police custody of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, spread through several American cities this weekend, Mr. Zuckerberg was forced to defend Facebook\u2019s position as\u2014in his words\u2014\u201can institution committed to free expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Mr. Trump posted on both Facebook and Twitter that he would respond to violent protests with military force, saying: \u201cWhen the looting starts, the shooting starts.\u201d But while Twitter slapped a warning on the post and hid it from view, Facebook left the message intact.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, Facebook employees contrasted their company\u2019s stance unfavorably with Twitter\u2019s, which last week also labelled two of Mr. Trump\u2019s other tweets as potentially misleading.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Freitas, who leads Facebook\u2019s News Feed design team, said in a tweet: \u201cMark is wrong, and I will endeavor in the loudest possible way to change his mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason Toff, who joined Facebook as a director of product management a year ago, pointed to a broader upsurge of employee activism inside the company. \u201cI work at Facebook and I am not proud of how we\u2019re showing up,\u201d he posted on Twitter. \u201cThe majority of co-workers I\u2019ve spoken to feel the same way. We are making our voice heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The protest inside the world\u2019s largest social media platform forced Mr. Zuckerberg to post two messages within three days\u2014one to explain his decision and another which offered a $10 million donation to groups working on racial justice.<\/p>\n<p>Tech staffers have proven a potent force for change in Silicon Valley in recent years, as companies including Google, Microsoft and Amazon have been targeted by their own employees over issues including workplace conditions, climate change and military contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Executives and companies across the tech industry, including Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Netflix, as well as Salesforce, Slack, Uber and Twitter, expressed their support for antiracism and criminal justice campaigns, through messages to employees, on their homepages or through official social media accounts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be silent is to be complicit. Black lives matter,\u201d said Netflix, while Amazon said: \u201cThe inequitable and brutal treatment of Black people in our country must stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday night, Mr. Zuckerberg wrote on his own Facebook profile that he had been \u201cstruggling with how to respond\u201d to Mr. Trump\u2019s posts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know many people are upset that we\u2019ve left the President\u2019s posts up, but our position is that we should enable as much expression as possible unless it will cause imminent risk of specific harms or dangers spelled out in clear policies,\u201d he said. \u201cI disagree strongly with how the President spoke about this, but I believe people should be able to see this for themselves, because ultimately accountability for those in positions of power can only happen when their speech is scrutinized out in the open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, after the Axios news website reported that Mr. Zuckerberg had had a \u201cproductive\u201d phone call with Mr. Trump on Friday, several employees took to Twitter over the weekend in protest at their chief executive\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren Tan, who left Netflix to join Facebook as a software engineer earlier this year, said in a tweet: \u201cFacebook\u2019s inaction in taking down Trump\u2019s post inciting violence makes me ashamed to work here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Crow, head of design for Facebook\u2019s Portal videoconferencing device, posted on Twitter: \u201cCensoring information that might help people see the complete picture is wrong. But giving a platform to incite violence and spread disinformation is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason Stirman, who works on R&amp;D at Facebook, said he \u201ccompletely disagrees with Mark\u2019s decision to do nothing about Trump\u2019s recent posts,\u201d adding: \u201cI\u2019m not alone inside of FB.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday night, following the barrage of criticism, Mr. Zuckerberg made another Facebook post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stand with the Black community,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBut it\u2019s clear Facebook also has more work to do to keep people safe and ensure our systems don\u2019t amplify bias.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facebook would donate $10 million to groups working to tackle racial injustice, he said, while also pointing to the tens of millions of dollars more that his personal philanthropic organization, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, invested in similar causes each year. \u201cThis week has made it clear how much more there is to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>One of his critics, Mr. Crow, praised Facebook\u2019s $10 million donation, calling it an \u201cimportant effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/ft.com\">\u00a9 2020 The Financial Times Ltd.
