{"id":34928,"date":"2020-05-12T10:41:09","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T10:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/72328d01-88c1-406e-97c5-be9b87bba217"},"modified":"2020-05-12T10:41:09","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T10:41:09","slug":"texas-courts-slammed-by-ransomware-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/texas-courts-slammed-by-ransomware-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas courts slammed by ransomware attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet4.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2020\/05\/12\/1e47db62-3faa-43b4-b7b2-afc3c9deafab\/thumbnail\/770x578\/ea2914a970d91a072eaee3f463797c7e\/screenshot-2020-05-12-at-08-16-39.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Texas has revealed a ransomware attack launched against its court system but insists no ransom will be paid.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement issued on Monday by the Office of Court Administration (OCA), later <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TxCourts\/status\/1259846481160417283\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">posted on Twitter<\/a>, the attack took place overnight last Thursday and was discovered on Friday morning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The agency is responsible for providing IT services to the Texan court system. The malware made its way through the OCA&#8217;s branch network, and as soon as the ransomware was spotted, linked servers and websites were disabled in an attempt at damage limitation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/zeus-sphinx-revamped-during-coronavirus-relief-payment-campaigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zeus Sphinx revamped as coronavirus relief payment attack wave continues<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It has not been disclosed what form of ransomware was deployed in the network, which remains disabled at the time of writing. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;OCA was able to catch the ransomware and limit its impact, and will not pay any ransom,&#8221; the agency added. &#8220;Work continues to bring all judicial resources and entities back online.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is not believed any sensitive information has been stolen and cloud services used by courts for filing and reviewing documents &#8212; including eFileTexas and reSearchTX &#8212; as well as email services, are unaffected. This, in turn, has led to opportunists leveraging the pandemic in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/zeus-sphinx-revamped-during-coronavirus-relief-payment-campaigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">malware campaigns<\/a> and new phishing attacks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The attack is unrelated to the courts&#8217; migration to remote hearings amid the coronavirus epidemic,&#8221; the OCA says. &#8220;Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, remediation, and recovery, OCA will not comment further.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>OCA is investigating the incident with the help of law enforcement and the Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR). The ransomware believed to be at fault is Snake, a relatively new strain that has previously been spotted in attacks against manufacturing and the industrial sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Previous and
