{"id":33961,"date":"2020-03-21T18:15:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-21T18:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a5e72d57-2d28-4fb6-b85d-599f8bdc01d2"},"modified":"2020-03-21T18:15:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-21T18:15:00","slug":"microsoft-pauses-edge-releases-amid-coronavirus-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-pauses-edge-releases-amid-coronavirus-outbreak\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft pauses Edge releases amid coronavirus outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet4.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2018\/10\/15\/c04ca450-1751-427d-ae4c-9ff2501af23d\/thumbnail\/770x578\/396fd813ef0ea6e8fcad7596c2566771\/edge.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Microsoft announced on Friday it was <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/msedgedev\/2020\/03\/20\/update-stable-channel-releases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">pausing the rollout of Edge v81<\/a>, citing the ongoing &#8220;global circumstances&#8221; surrounding the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>New Edge releases (or any other kind of software updates) usually entail security reviews and compatibility testing to ensure operating systems and internal web applications don&#8217;t break.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-latest-news-2020-03-20\/\" data-omniture-track=\"moduleClick\" data-omniture-track-data=\"{&quot;moduleInfo&quot;: &quot;link_anchor&quot;, &quot;pageType&quot;: &quot;article&quot;}\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" data-component=\"externalLink\">COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak<\/a><\/span>, most system administrators are most likely busy handling the security of employees working from home and taking care of their families in these tough times.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft said it does not want to put an extra strain on system administrators and other IT staff personnel by releasing a new Edge version at this particular time.<\/p>\n<p>Redmond&#8217;s decision comes two days after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/google-pauses-chrome-and-chrome-os-releases-due-to-coronavirus-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google announced a similar measure for Chrome v81<\/a>, postponing the v81 release indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>Just like the Chrome team, Microsoft said that Edge will continue to receive security updates, but that the &#8220;stable&#8221; Edge 81 version that comes with deprecations and breaking changes has been delayed until things go back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>Another browser vendor that also had to adapt to the new coronavirus reality was Mozilla.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/firefox-74-is-out-here-are-the-key-changes-and-features\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mozilla released Firefox 74<\/a>, which deprecated the TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 protocols. These protocols are utilized to sustain the security of HTTPS connections; however, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/browsers-to-block-access-to-https-sites-using-tls-1-0-and-1-1-starting-this-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were deemed insecure and removed from Firefox this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/74.0\/releasenotes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">an update to the Firefox 74.0 release notes<\/a>, Mozilla said it was temporarily re-enabling the protocols to make sure users had access to some critical government
