{"id":33656,"date":"2020-03-04T15:33:26","date_gmt":"2020-03-04T15:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/c384f372-8412-4a96-bef5-c6e1a0af9b1f"},"modified":"2020-03-04T15:33:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-04T15:33:26","slug":"cathay-pacific-hit-with-500000-fine-for-customer-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/cathay-pacific-hit-with-500000-fine-for-customer-data-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"Cathay Pacific hit with \u00a3500,000 fine for customer data breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2020\/03\/04\/6cd2c06c-711d-4714-8f75-79c94d4751b8\/thumbnail\/770x578\/ddca67fa8bbe6d1151f77c90e42546e8\/cathay-pacific-plane.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>International airline Cathay Pacific has been issued with a \u00a3500,000 fine for failing to secure the personal data of its customers.<\/p>\n<p>The Information Commissioner&#8217;s Office (ICO) said that, between October 2014 and May 2018 Cathay Pacific&#8217;s computer systems lacked appropriate security measures which led to customers&#8217; personal details being exposed, 111,578 of whom were from the UK, and around 9.4 million more worldwide. The airline&#8217;s failure to secure its systems resulted in the unauthorised access to their passengers&#8217; personal details including: names, passport and identity details, dates of birth, postal and email addresses, phone numbers and historical travel information, the ICO said, issuing the fine.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by the data protection authority found &#8216;a catalogue of errors&#8217; in how the airline handled cybersecurity which resulted in the breach \u2013 which had been ongoing since at least October 2014 \u2013 not being uncovered and disclosed until May 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/media\/action-weve-taken\/mpns\/2617314\/cathay-pacific-mpn-20200210.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">The ICO<\/a>&nbsp;said the attack was able to take place because back-ups were not password protected or encrypted, internet-facing servers were left unpatched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/these-are-the-top-ten-software-flaws-used-by-crooks-make-sure-youve-applied-the-patches\/\">despite a known vulnerability<\/a>, the use of an unsupported operating system and inadequate anti-virus protection.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/cybersecurity-how-to-get-your-software-patching-strategy-right-and-keep-the-hackers-at-bay\/\">software patching management strategy<\/a> and users being able to remotely access systems without any sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/protect-yourself-how-to-choose-the-right-two-factor-authenticator-app\/\">multi-factor authentication<\/a> have also been criticised.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>SEE:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/topic\/a-winning-strategy-for-cybersecurity\/\"><strong><strong>A winning strategy for cybersecurity<\/strong><\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>(ZDNet special report) |&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/resource-library\/whitepapers\/a-winning-strategy-for-cybersecurity-free-pdf\/?ftag=CMG-01-10aaa1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\"><strong><strong>Download the report as a PDF<\/strong><\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>(TechRepublic)<\/p>\n<p>Cathay Pacific only became aware of suspicious activity in March 2018 \u2013 three and a half years after the initial breach \u2013 after the database became victim of a brute-force attack as hackers tried to access additional areas by attempting to guess passwords.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>Following this, a cybersecurity company was brought in to investigate the attack and the incident was referred to the ICO.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People rightly expect when they provide their personal details to a company, that those details will be kept secure to ensure they are protected from any potential harm or fraud. That simply was not the case here,&#8221; said Steve Eckersley, ICO director of investigations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This breach was particularly concerning given the number of basic security inadequacies across Cathay Pacific&#8217;s system, which gave easy access to the hackers. The multiple serious deficiencies we found fell well below the standard expected,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the failures, the ICO has issued a Cathay Pacific with a fine of \u00a3500,000 \u2013 the maximum figure possible under the Data Protection Act 1998.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The company would once again like to express its regret, and to sincerely apologise for this incident,&#8221; said a statement from Cathay Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Substantial amounts have been spent on IT infrastructure and security over the past three years and investment in these areas will continue,&#8221; the airline added.<\/p>\n<p>The Cathay Pacific data breach occurred before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/gdpr-how-europes-digital-privacy-rules-have-changed-everything\/\">GDPR came into force in May 2018<\/a>&nbsp;which introduced significantly higher financial
