{"id":33544,"date":"2020-02-25T14:59:51","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T14:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/30963\/DISA-Breach-Likely-Exposed-Personal-Data-On-At-Least-200-000.html"},"modified":"2020-02-25T14:59:51","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T14:59:51","slug":"disa-breach-likely-exposed-personal-data-on-at-least-200000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/disa-breach-likely-exposed-personal-data-on-at-least-200000\/","title":{"rendered":"DISA Breach Likely Exposed Personal Data On At Least 200,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/databreach_1091065-2.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg\">\n<p>The breach at one of the networks of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), which secures communications for President Trump and military intelligence and other government officials, affected as many as 200,000 people, exposing their personal information, including Social Security numbers.<\/p>\n<p>In a Feb. 11 letter to potential victims, DISA offered few details of the breach that occurred between May and July 2019, according to a Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-defense-breach\/us-agency-responsible-for-trumps-secure-communication-suffered-data-breach-letter-idUSKBN20E27A\">report<\/a>, though a DISA spokesperson cited said they were given \u201cinformation about actions that can be taken to mitigate possible negative impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noting that the agency took \u201cthe potential compromise very seriously,\u201d DISA Chief Risk Officer and CIO Roger Greenwell wrote that DISA had \u201cput additional security measures in place to prevent future incidents\u201d and is \u201cadopting new protocols to increase protection of all PII.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since DISA hasn\u2019t provided many details on the breach, \u201cwe don\u2019t know if the Department of Defense (DoD) knew about the breach and didn\u2019t share details, or if they only just discovered the breach,\u201d said Chris Morales, head of security analytics at Vectra. \u201cThe thought that comes to mind immediately here is that if the DoD can be compromised, that anyone can. Every network is complex and human error is common regardless of the level of organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morales said the \u201cinformation compromised seems to be non-critical to the function of the DoD (although very personal and private to the people compromised) so it may have been an external databased without the same level of controls as internal secret information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ilia Kolochenko, founder and CEO of ImmuniWeb agreed that on the surface, the incident seems to be \u201ccomparatively insignificant.\u201d But he urged an in-depth investigation \u201cto ascertain whether other systems or devices have been impacted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nation-state attackers frequently \u201ccommence their attacks by breaching the weakest link accessible from the Internet and then silently propagate to all other interconnected systems in a series of chained attacks,\u201d Kolochenko said<em>.&nbsp;<\/em><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Worse, access to personal data of the agency staff greatly facilitates a wide spectrum of sophisticated spear-phishing and identity theft attacks capable to bypass virtually any modern layers of defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The disclosure timeline may hold some clues as to the severity of the attack and what\u2019s to come. It \u201cseems to be impermissibly protracted&nbsp;given that the breach reportedly happened almost a year ago,\u201d said Kolochenko. That might very well indicate \u201cattack sophistication, and what has been reported so far may just the tip of the iceberg,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>READ MORE <a
