{"id":33294,"date":"2020-02-12T18:13:50","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T18:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/30931\/FBI-Says-Cybercrime-Profits-Reached-3.5-Billion-In-2019.html"},"modified":"2020-02-12T18:13:50","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T18:13:50","slug":"fbi-says-cybercrime-profits-reached-3-5-billion-in-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/fbi-says-cybercrime-profits-reached-3-5-billion-in-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI Says Cybercrime Profits Reached $3.5 Billion In 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Silhouette of man on computer\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/12F9F\/production\/_110872777_cybercrime.gif\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span> <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span> <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span> <span class=\"media-caption__text\"> The crimes remain similar but the techniques are getting more sophisticated <\/span> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Criminals netted $3.5bn (\u00a32.7bn) from cyber-crimes reported to the FBI alone in 2019, according to the service&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/default.aspx\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">internet crime complaint centre (IC3).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It received 467,361 complaints from individuals and businesses during the year and has had nearly five million since its inception in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Phishing and extortion remain the most popular ways of scamming people.<\/p>\n<p>It says techniques are becoming more sophisticated, making it harder for people to tell &#8220;real from fake&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This is especially true of web and email addresses that are fooling people because they look increasingly legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>Last year IC3 had 13,633 complaints from victims of so-called tech-support fraud, which involves a scammer phoning an individual and claiming there is a problem with their computer that needs immediate fixing. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Keep reporting it&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Losses amounted to more than $54m and complaints came from victims in 48 countries. The vast majority were over 60 years of age.<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware &#8211; where hackers lock down computers and demand a payment to unlock them &#8211; netted more than $8.9m over the year, according to the group. <\/p>\n<p>It urged members of the public to continue reporting crimes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Information reported to the IC3 plays a vital role in the FBI&#8217;s ability to understand our cyber-adversaries and their motives, which, in turn, helps us to impose risks and consequences on those who break our laws and threaten our national security,&#8221; said assistant director of the
