Google engineers described the fraudulent transactions as happening &#8220;at scale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ban on publishing or updating impacts all paid extensions. This includes Chrome extensions that require paying a fee before installing, extensions that work based on monthly subscriptions, or Chrome extensions that use one-time in-app purchases to get access to various features.<\/p>\n<p>Existing commercial extensions are still available for download via the official Chrome Web Store, however, extension developers can&#8217;t push new updates.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a temporary measure meant to stem this influx as we look for long-term solutions to address the broader pattern of abuse,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/chromium.org\/forum\/#!topic\/chromium-extensions\/EW0VuDjZSO4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">said Simeon Vincent<\/a>, Developer Advocate for Chrome Extensions at Google.<\/p>\n<p>Extension developers who try to publish a new paid Chrome extension, or push a new update on their commercial extensions, are currently receiving an automated message that reads: &#8220;<em>Spam and Placement in the Store<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"img aspect-set\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/the-chrome-web-store-is-currently-facing-a-wave-of-fraudulent-transactions\/\" class=\"lazy\" alt=\"cws-tweet.png\" data-original=\" https:\/\/zdnet2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/01\/25\/c1589dac-b9e3-4731-9b98-4a974543bd11\/cws-tweet.png\"><\/span><noscript><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"img aspect-set\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2020\/01\/25\/c1589dac-b9e3-4731-9b98-4a974543bd11\/cws-tweet.png\" class alt=\"cws-tweet.png\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Some big-name extensions have been impacted by this ban, including password manager <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/chromium.org\/d\/msg\/chromium-extensions\/2tdmDLuqu4Q\/URiYo0wqBQAJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Dashlane<\/a> and meeting planner app <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/chromium.org\/d\/msg\/chromium-extensions\/TYnlLcniSfM\/B9oth2r_EwAJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Comeet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>The decision to ban publishing or updating Chrome extension was formally announced late on Friday night, January 24. However, Jeff Johson, the creator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/stopthemadness\/gfdahjcdgfioalhekjflcpijhngbjgdo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">StopTheMadness Chrome extension<\/a>, has told <em>ZDNet<\/em> that Google has been silently blocking updates for paid Chrome extensions for days [<a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/chromium.org\/forum\/#!topic\/chromium-extensions\/TYnlLcniSfM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/chromium.org\/forum\/#!topic\/chromium-extensions\/pJYY6A-2LKQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/chromium.org\/forum\/#!topic\/chromium-extensions\/QT6QOfEokJg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">3<\/a>, <a
