In any case, so far we know that a worker fell to a phishing email, internal records were changed, and money ended up being transferred to the wrong account \u2013 a criminal&#8217;s coffers.<\/p>\n<p>The Manor Independent School District, from a suburb just outside of Austin, USA, said it has called in the FBI to probe the theft. The district services nearly 10,000 students.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2015\/02\/20\/jaws.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"jaws\"><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"Lithuanian bloke locked up for mother of all phishing capers\">Five years in the clink for super-crook who scammed Google, Facebook out of $120m with fake tech invoices<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2019\/12\/20\/facebook_google_hacker_five_years\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This investigation is still ongoing and although there are strong leads in the case we are still encouraging anyone with information to contact [police],&#8221; the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ManorISD\/status\/1215731859805609984\">school district said<\/a> of the seven-figure scam. &#8220;Manor ISD appreciates the Manor Police Department for working together to communicate this to our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The school district did not say exactly how scumbags were able to extract so much money, though telly station <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/fbi-investigating-after-manor-isd-loses-23m-in-phishing-email-scam\">CBS Austin<\/a> reported the money was funneled out in three separate transactions in November. The caper was only spotted and reported to police in December by a school district employee.<\/p>\n<p>The Manor district is hardly alone in falling victim to these sort of phishing attacks. Last year, a small town in Colorado was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2020\/01\/06\/roundup_january_2\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">taken for $1m<\/a> by a targeted phishing attack. In that case, the hackers impersonated a construction company that had been doing business with the city and directed workers to re-route payments to the criminals&#8217; account.<\/p>\n<p>Manor also not alone in being a school district targeted by criminals. Because districts often manage thousands of computers with a minimal IT staff, they can be low-hanging fruit for ransomware and other electronic attacks, with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2019\/12\/17\/us_congress_election_funds\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dozens of schools<\/a> falling victim over the last year. \u00ae<\/p>\n<p class=\"wptl
