{"id":32590,"date":"2020-01-03T19:15:15","date_gmt":"2020-01-03T19:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/30809\/Travelex-Suspends-Services-Post-Malware-Discovery.html"},"modified":"2020-01-03T19:15:15","modified_gmt":"2020-01-03T19:15:15","slug":"travelex-suspends-services-post-malware-discovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/travelex-suspends-services-post-malware-discovery\/","title":{"rendered":"Travelex Suspends Services Post Malware Discovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/07\/thinkstockphotos166198535_1134702-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg\">\n<p>Foreign exchange financials company Travelex has suspended its UK-based digital services offline since New Year\u2019s Eve, following the discovery of an undisclosed malware program.<\/p>\n<p>As of Jan. 3 at 11:30 a.m. ET, the London-based company remains unable to conduct monetary transactions via its website or app. Services are still being conducted manually, however.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have deployed teams of IT specialists and external cybersecurity experts who have been working continuously since New Year\u2019s Eve to isolate the virus and restore affected systems,\u201d reads a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TravelexUK\/status\/1212840156480315401\/photo\/1\">company statement<\/a> on Twitter. \u201cWe are doing all we can to restore our full services as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travelex has not specified if the malware is a variant of ransomware or some other breed of threat. However, the company says is has not seen any evidence suggesting that customer data was compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple Twitter users who appear to be Travelex customers have replied to the company\u2019s disclosure, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TravelexUK\/status\/1212840156480315401\">complaining<\/a> that they are unable to obtain money while traveling. In addition to currency exchange, the company\u2019s services include international payments and prepaid credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe regret having to suspend some of our services in order to contain the virus and protect data,\u201d said Tony D\u2019Souza, Travelex\u2019s chief executive, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2020\/jan\/02\/travelex-forced-to-take-down-website-after-cyber-attack?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;CMP=twt_b-gdnnews&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1577998709\">according to the UK\u2019s The Guardian<\/a>. \u201cWe apologize to all our customers for any inconvenience caused as a result. We are doing all we can to restore our full services as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company added: \u201cOur investigation to date shows no indication that any personal or customer data has been compromised. We\u2019ve deployed teams of IT specialists and external cyber security experts who\u2019ve been working continuously since New Year\u2019s Eve to isolate the virus and restore the systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Travelex is owned by Abu Dhabi-based finance company Finablr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Christmas-New Year period is ideal for phishing and other socially engineered attacks,\u201d said Colin Bastable, CEO of Lucy Security, in emailed comments. \u201cPeople are distracted, businesses are short-staffed and it is relatively easy to deliver a malware payload in a New Year-themed
