That means that businesses with NB-IoT deployments in those areas can use that single network to connect their entire implementation. It\u2019s designed to handle large numbers of less data-intensive IoT endpoints over a wide area, so it\u2019s likely to be available in most locations where you\u2019d want to install an IoT system.<\/p>\n<p>Rolling out more capable IoT-focused networking options will only deepen that appeal, now that each of the big four has an NB-IoT network in operation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Congress and IoT security<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) <a href=\"https:\/\/homelandprepnews.com\/stories\/38493-bill-addresses-iot-risks-cybersecurity-training\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">introduced a bill last week<\/a> that would require the Office of Management and Budget to train federal employees in cybersecurity and to talk specifically about the risks posed by IoT devices.<\/p>\n<p>Khanna\u2019s announcement of the bill cites a Congressional Research Service report on the risks of IoT, warning of less capable devices, not designed with security in mind, potentially incapable of receiving important security updates, and so on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/khanna.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/release-rep-khanna-bolsters-tech-policy-work-introduces-internet-things\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Internet of Things Cybersecurity Training for Federal Employees Act<\/a> is an important step in the right direction for the federal bureaucracy, which employs about two million people, not including the postal service and the armed forces. It\u2019s hard to ignore the potential impact of IoT-based security breaches in the federal government, particularly where election security is involved.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Insecurie IoT devices: &#8216;The asbestos of the future&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Well-known cybersecurity expert and F-Secure Chief Research Officer Mikko Hypp\u00f6nen is probably one of the leading thinkers on digital threats in the world, and he\u2019s certainly among the most quotable. Hypp\u00f6nen has already coined an eponymous \u201cHypp\u00f6nen\u2019s Law\u201d about IoT, which states that \u201cif it\u2019s smart, it\u2019s vulnerable.\u201d Fair enough.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verdict.co.uk\/mikko-hypponen-smart-devices-it-asbestos\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">interview with analysis and consultancy firm GlobalData<\/a>, Hypp\u00f6nen compared the proliferation of insecure IoT devices to \u201cthe asbestos of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s happening right now, around us, I guess would be characterized as IT asbestos,\u201d he said. \u201cSuch a great innovation, which then decades later turned out to be the worst innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, to be clear, Hypp\u00f6nen seems to have mostly been talking about consumer IoT \u2013 the connected toaster ovens and washing machines of the world.
