{"id":29848,"date":"2019-10-22T17:10:02","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T17:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/30610\/Magecart-Group-Linked-To-Dridex-Banking-Trojan-Carbanak.html"},"modified":"2019-10-22T17:10:02","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T17:10:02","slug":"magecart-group-linked-to-dridex-banking-trojan-carbanak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/magecart-group-linked-to-dridex-banking-trojan-carbanak\/","title":{"rendered":"Magecart Group Linked To Dridex Banking Trojan, Carbanak"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2019\/10\/22\/533b3c76-551d-4022-98f7-aaa63093cf3f\/thumbnail\/770x578\/477d1a25a3f96a3ac5fb123c98c15e73\/screenshot-2019-10-22-at-11-33-50.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>An active Magecart scheme has ties to Dridex phishing campaigns and the Carbanak group, indicating that skimmer scripts may be a prelude to more traditional malware use, researchers say.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, cybersecurity researchers from Malwarebytes said one of the Magecart groups that are currently active, assigned the name <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.malwarebytes.com\/threat-analysis\/2019\/10\/the-forgotten-domain-exploring-a-link-between-magecart-group-5-and-the-carbanak-apt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Magecart Group 5<\/a>, appears to have connections to the Carbanak Advanced Persistence Threat (APT) gang.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/magecart-strikes-again-hotel-booking-websites-come-under-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magecart<\/a> appeared on the scene several years ago, the name was attributed to a group that specialized in the use of card skimmer JavaScript. These scripts would be covertly loaded onto compromised e-commerce platforms and services and would harvest payment card details input by victims when attempting to make a purchase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also:&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/old-magecart-domains-reincarnated-in-new-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Old Magecart web domains resurrected for fraudulent ad schemes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>British Airways, Ticketmaster, Newegg, and thousands of other retailers have fallen prey to this tactic, usually made successful through Content Management System (CMS) vulnerabilities and misconfigured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/new-magecart-attacks-leverage-misconfigured-s3-buckets-to-infect-over-17k-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cloud services<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, however, the term Magecart is employed to describe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/old-magecart-domains-reincarnated-in-new-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">groups of threat actors<\/a> that employ card skimmers online, as well as the tactic itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Magecart Group 5 has a &#8220;very different modus operandi&#8221; to others in the space, Malwarebytes says, as it tends to hone in on weaknesses in the supply chain and low-hanging fruit rather than directly assault its true targets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_zd_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>If third-party suppliers can be compromised by infiltrating their networks and tampering with libraries or &#8216;security seals&#8217; &#8212; trust indicators that an online store is safe &#8212; the group can potentially attack thousands of domains down the line at once.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to researchers J\u00e9r\u00f4me Segura, William Tsing and Adam Thomas, Magecart Group 5 is likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/new-dridex-malware-strain-avoids-antivirus-software-detection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">linked to Dridex<\/a>, a banking Trojan that first made the rounds in 2014 and has been actively employed in the theft of online banking credentials ever since.<\/p>\n<p>The malware is generally spread through phishing schemes employing fake invoice notices. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Utilizing data from WHOIS records predating the EU&#8217;s General Data Protection Regulation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/gdpr-an-executive-guide-to-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GDPR<\/a>), Malwarebytes uncovered registrant data from a &#8216;bulletproof&#8217; registrar in China called BIZCN\/CNOBIN.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While the group did register domains used in their card skimming campaigns under privacy protection services, Magecart Group 5 did not apply for this protection under all records, revealing a set of malicious domains registered by the same guotang323@yahoo.com email address used in both Magecart skimming and Dridex used in corporate e-fax phishing email campaigns targeting Germans, while others are OnePosting and Xero phishing scams &#8212; both of which attempt to deploy the malware on the devices of those who fall for fraudulent messages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The registered phone number, too, may provide a further connection to other campaigns. +86. 1066569215, as examined by cybersecurity <a examined Magecart Group 5 and its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.malwarebytes.com\/threat-analysis\/2019\/10\/magecart-group-4-a-link-with-cobalt-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">potential ties<\/a> to Cobalt, a pernicious hacking group believed to be responsible for the theft of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/cobalt-threat-group-serves-up-spicyomelette-in-bank-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">millions of dollars<\/a> from financial
