{"id":29580,"date":"2019-10-09T00:34:16","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T00:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/twitter-no-really-were-very-sorry-we-sold-your-security-info-for-a-boatload-of-cash\/"},"modified":"2019-10-09T00:34:16","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T00:34:16","slug":"twitter-no-really-were-very-sorry-we-sold-your-security-info-for-a-boatload-of-cash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/twitter-no-really-were-very-sorry-we-sold-your-security-info-for-a-boatload-of-cash\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter: No, really, we&#8217;re very sorry we sold your security info for a boatload of cash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Twitter says it was just an accident that caused the microblogging giant to let advertisers use private information to better target their marketing materials at users.<\/p>\n<p>The social networking giant on Tuesday <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/information-and-ads\">admitted<\/a> to an &#8220;error&#8221; that let advertisers have access to the private information customers had given Twitter in order to place additional security protections on their accounts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We recently discovered that when you provided an email address or phone number for safety or security purposes (for example, two-factor authentication) this data may have inadvertently been used for advertising purposes, specifically in our Tailored Audiences and Partner Audiences advertising system,&#8221; Twitter said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When an advertiser uploaded their marketing list, we may have matched people on Twitter to their list based on the email or phone number the Twitter account holder provided for safety and security purposes. This was an error and we apologize.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Twitter assures users that no &#8220;personal&#8221; information was shared, though we&#8217;re not sure what Twitter would consider &#8220;personal information&#8221; if your phone number and email address do not meet the bar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We cannot say with certainty how many people were impacted by this, but in an effort to be transparent, we wanted to make everyone aware. No personal data was ever shared externally with our partners or any other third parties,&#8221; the mea cupa reads.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2019\/10\/02\/spiltmilkshake.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"Spilt beverage on dirty city floor\"><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"It's not like it was particularly time-sensitive anyway\">UK ads watchdog bans Burger King Twitter jibe for condoning chucking milkshakes at politicians<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2019\/10\/02\/burger_king_milkshake_tweet_irresponsible\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;As of September 17, we have addressed the issue that allowed this to occur and are no longer using phone numbers or email addresses collected for safety or security purposes for advertising.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Facebook was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2019\/07\/24\/facebook_fined_5bn_over_privacy_snafu_by_federal_trade_commission\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">handed a $5bn fine<\/a> by the US government for playing fast and loose with the personal information of its customers. It is not clear what this incident could mean for Twitter legally, if anything. The FTC declined to comment on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Users, however, do not look to be happy with either the mishap or the way Twitter is handling the disclosure.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"7.5107913669065\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">No problem, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Twitter?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@twitter<\/a>! liability for Twitter, the incident will have the added effect of making users less safe by discouraging them from using phone numbers and email verification as additional levels of
