{"id":29490,"date":"2019-10-04T17:19:07","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T17:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fed93e2c-6f05-425e-a50b-b2417d8e5ee2"},"modified":"2019-10-04T17:19:07","modified_gmt":"2019-10-04T17:19:07","slug":"microsoft-iranian-hackers-targeted-a-2020-presidential-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/microsoft-iranian-hackers-targeted-a-2020-presidential-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft: Iranian hackers targeted a 2020 presidential campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2018\/05\/09\/9824ea10-5e49-4e4e-9202-a97915bb5fa4\/thumbnail\/770x578\/ed379f28a74c673a4e96e1b8ab53500f\/iran-thumb.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Microsoft disclosed today that Iranian state-sponsored hackers tried to hack into email accounts belonging to current and former US government officials, and members of a 2020 US presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The attacks have taken place &#8220;in a 30-day period between August and September,&#8221; Tom Burt, Corporate Vice President, Customer Security &amp; Trust at Microsoft, said today.<\/p>\n<h3>Attacks linked to Phosphorus group<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft&#8217;s Threat Intelligence Center (MSTIC) <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2019\/10\/04\/recent-cyberattacks-require-us-all-to-be-vigilant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\">linked the attacks to a group the company calls Phosphorous<\/a> (other names are APT35, Charming Kitten, and the Ajax Security Team). The group has been linked to Iran&#8217;s government in reports from multiple cyber-security vendors.<\/p>\n<p>Burt said the group operated in different stages. It first made more than 2,700 probes to identify consumer email accounts belonging to specific Microsoft customers.<\/p>\n<p>Once the group had a list of high-value targets, it went after 241 of those accounts, which included &#8220;accounts are associated with a U.S. presidential campaign, current and former US government officials, journalists covering global politics and prominent Iranians living outside Iran.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of these, the hackers breached four.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These four accounts were not associated with the U.S. presidential campaign or current and former U.S. government officials,&#8221; Burt said.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_ZD_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>The company has notified all users about the hacks, and has helped victims secure accounts.<\/p>\n<h3>How the hackers got in<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft said the Iranian hackers gained access to the four accounts by first getting access to the victim&#8217;s secondary email inbox, which the victim used as a secondary email for the Microsoft account.<\/p>\n<p>Hackers then reset the password for the Microsoft account, and used the reset link they received in the secondary inbox to take control of the primary Microsoft account.<\/p>\n<p>The OS maker is urging high-profile Microsoft users that are part of political campaigns, think tanks, or NGOs, to sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoftaccountguard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">Microsoft AccountGuard<\/a>, a special Microsoft service part of the Defending Democracy program.<\/p>\n<p>Accounts part of AccountGuard receive additional security features, protections, and threat notifications. Microsoft said that more than 26,000 accounts from 26 countries are now part of the AccountGuard service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To date, we&#8217;ve made more than 800 notifications of attempted nation-state attacks to AccountGuard customers,&#8221; Burt said.<\/p>\n<p>This is Microsoft&#8217;s second high-profile brush with Phosphorus. In March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/microsoft-takes-control-of-99-domains-operated-by-iranian-state-hackers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft sued and gained control over 99 web domains<\/a> the same hacker group was using for spear-phishing campaigns. The domains impersonated well-known brands, such as Microsoft, Yahoo, and others.<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
