{"id":29411,"date":"2019-10-01T16:35:12","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T16:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/vbulletin-zero-day-kos-comodo-user-forums-thats-245000-accounts-at-risk-of-compromise\/"},"modified":"2019-10-01T16:35:12","modified_gmt":"2019-10-01T16:35:12","slug":"vbulletin-zero-day-kos-comodo-user-forums-thats-245000-accounts-at-risk-of-compromise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/vbulletin-zero-day-kos-comodo-user-forums-thats-245000-accounts-at-risk-of-compromise\/","title":{"rendered":"vBulletin zero-day KOs Comodo user forums \u2013 that&#8217;s 245,000 accounts at risk of compromise"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2016\/10\/28\/fail.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Security plaftorm vendor Comodo has &#8216;fessed up to a digital break-in affecting 245,000 users \u2013 after it ignored line one in the first chapter of the &#8220;How to do Basic Security&#8221; book about timely patching of software.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the whole world (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2019\/09\/24\/vbulletin_vbug_zeroday\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">yup, us too<\/a>) shouting about the latest zero-day bug in vBulletin forum software, Comodo \u2013 whose website currently boasts &#8220;Breach Proof Your Business with Our Zero Trust Platform&#8221; \u2013 failed to update its customer forums.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the company was forced to take them offline while red-faced admins installed the latest version, protecting against the zero-day detailed at the link above.<\/p>\n<p>Including the routine boilerplate about security being &#8220;our highest priority&#8221;, a Comodo statement published on its newly restored <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/forums.comodo.com\/general-announcements\/important-security-notice-about-comodo-forums-accounts-t124921.0.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forums<\/a> admitted:<\/p>\n<p>The date on the first link in this article is 24 September, meaning Comodo had five whole days&#8217; notice to patch the forum.<\/p>\n<p>Comodo confirmed that its forums, just like every other vBulletin install out there, &#8220;contain information such as username, name, e-mail address, last IP used to access the forums and if used, potentially some social media usernames in very limited situations&#8221;. Comodo added that &#8220;all user passwords in the database were stored encrypted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those forums currently have around 245,000 registered users by the firm&#8217;s own admission.<\/p>\n<p>vBulletin&#8217;s default password protection method uses bcrypt, as a Comodo <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/forum.vbulletin.com\/articles\/4401436-vbulletin-password-handling\">forum post (ho ho, very funny)<\/a> explains.
