The company said its BlackBerry Labs unit will include a team of over 120 software developers, architects, researchers, product leads and security experts.<\/p>\n<p>BlackBerry said the new lab will have a focus on data science and machine learning and aims to &#8220;investigate, incubate and facilitate&#8221; technologies for security and data privacy for its customers. Initial projects from BlackBerry Labs will focus on machine-learning approaches to security for BlackBerry&#8217;s Cylance, enterprise and QNX business units.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/resource-library\/whitepapers\/10-tips-for-new-cybersecurity-pros-free-pdf\/?ftag=CMG-01-10aaa1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"externalLink\"><strong>10 tips for new cybersecurity pros<\/strong><\/a> <strong>(free PDF)<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While BlackBerry is still best known as an early smartphone pioneer, it no longer makes devices (these are made under licence by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tclcom.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\">TCL Communication<\/a>), and now focuses on security software for smartphones and the internet of things, embedded systems and autonomous cars.<\/p>\n<p>As part of that transition, BlackBerry last year acquired security company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/blackberry-is-buying-ai-powered-security-company-cylance-for-1-4bn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cylance for $1.4bn<\/a>. Cylance uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict and prevent security threats: part of the new lab&#8217;s role will be to embed that AI\/ML technology in BlackBerry&#8217;s wider
