Customers of a Californian biz offering payouts of up to $50,000 in case your cat videos get Wannacry\u2019d but experts worry it could make the problem worse.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles-based firm Mercury Insurance <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2019\/09\/12\/homeowners-renters-can-get-cyber-protection-coverage-in-california\/\">reportedly<\/a> began offering \u201ccyber protection coverage\u201d to its retail customers in the USA earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHomeowners and renters have enjoyed the added convenience provided by computers, tablets and smartphones, but these devices create new opportunities for cybercriminals to infiltrate your home,\u201d the firm\u2019s Jane Li informed the Orange County Register (no relation to Vulture Central).<\/p>\n<p>Thus, should your stock of cat videos and unpublishable memes become subject to a ransomware attack, you can make a claim for the cost of the ransom. Mercury will review the claim and if credible, cover the insured\u2019s loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\"><span>But what about unintended consequences<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Brett Callow of antivirus biz Emsisoft opined that while \u201cransomware attacks against home users have been in steady decline\u201d because businesses are more lucrative targets, \u201cif policies such as this become popular, it could change that dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, threats actors would\u2019ve had a near-zero chance of getting a $50k ransom from a home user to unlock their collection of cat memes, but an insured victim could be willing and able to pay,\u201d warned Callow. \u201cAnd, of course, home users likely make for softer targets than businesses, making them an even more attractive target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason Nurse, a cybersecurity boffin from the University of Kent, was skeptical about whether the product would trigger increased attention and large payouts by insurers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2019\/09\/06\/finger_shutterstock.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"finger\"><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"Oh, so you can just do that?
