{"id":28939,"date":"2019-09-06T14:45:48","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T14:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/30474\/Thousands-Of-Servers-Infected-With-Lilocked-Ransomware.html"},"modified":"2019-09-06T14:45:48","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T14:45:48","slug":"thousands-of-servers-infected-with-lilocked-ransomware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/thousands-of-servers-infected-with-lilocked-ransomware\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands Of Servers Infected With Lilocked Ransomware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of web servers have been infected and had their files encrypted by a new strain of ransomware named Lilocked (or Lilu).<\/p>\n<p>Infections have been happening since mid-July, and have intensified in the past two weeks, ZDNet has learned.<\/p>\n<p>Based on current evidence, the Lilocked ransomware appears to target Linux-based systems only.<\/p>\n<p>First reports date to mid-July, after some victims uploaded the Lilocked ransom note\/demand on ID Ransomware, a website for identifying the name of the ransomware that infected a victim&#8217;s system.<\/p>\n<p>The way the Lilocked gang breaches servers and encrypts their content is currently unknown. <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengines.guru\/showthread.php?t=1021112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A thread on a Russian-speaking forum<\/a> puts forward the theory that crooks might be targeting systems running outdated Exim (email) software. According to French security researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benkow_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benkow<\/a>, Lilocked has encrypted more than 6,700 servers, many of which have been indexed and cached in Google search results.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"img aspect-set\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/thousands-of-servers-infected-with-new-lilocked-lilu-ransomware\/\" class=\"lazy\" alt=\"lilocked-search.png\" data-original=\" https:\/\/zdnet2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2019\/09\/06\/c8b4ccf1-9a84-48c3-b42e-396b885c48e1\/15884614049c43fbef861471348be0fa\/lilocked-search.png\"><\/span><noscript><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"img aspect-set\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2019\/09\/06\/c8b4ccf1-9a84-48c3-b42e-396b885c48e1\/15884614049c43fbef861471348be0fa\/lilocked-search.png\" class alt=\"lilocked-search.png\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/noscript> <span class=\"credit\">Image: ZDNet<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, the number of victims is suspected to be much much higher. Not all Linux systems run web servers, and there are many other infected systems that haven&#8217;t been indexed in Google search results.<\/p>\n<p>Because the initial entry point for this threat remains a mystery, it&#8217;s impossible to provide anything but generic security advice to server owners &#8212; who are advised to use unique passwords for all their accounts and keep applications up to date with security patches.<\/p>\n<p>The Lilocked gang did not reply to a request for comment sent to the email address they&#8217;re listing in the ransom note.<\/p>\n<p> READ MORE <a
