{"id":2810,"date":"2018-06-13T19:17:08","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T19:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/8ca2afe4-9397-400a-96a9-7b3fbe622b01"},"modified":"2018-06-13T19:17:08","modified_gmt":"2018-06-13T19:17:08","slug":"a-protester-is-spreading-anti-article-13-messages-over-exposed-internet-tvs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/a-protester-is-spreading-anti-article-13-messages-over-exposed-internet-tvs\/","title":{"rendered":"A protester is spreading anti-Article 13 messages over exposed internet TVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"img aspect-set\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2018\/06\/13\/cf851870-f12d-4901-ac48-d21dc22e9870\/resize\/770xauto\/a8e344f23d01a7ba278934e3fe749faf\/tv-eu-article-13-hero.jpg\" class=\"\" alt=\"\" height=\"auto\" width=\"770\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">(Image: supplied)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you woke up with a message on your television to &#8220;call your MEPs to stop Article 13&#8221; you weren&#8217;t alone.<\/p>\n<p>An unnamed protester, who goes by the handle <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cybanakinvader\">Cyber Anakin<\/a>, has leveraged unprotected and exposed television set-top boxes to warn Europeans about an impending law change, which critics say could mandate user-uploaded content filtering as part of a copyright reform effort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/dixons-carphone-falls-victim-to-huge-data-breach-attackers-accessed-5-9-million-customer-card\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dixons Carphone hit by huge data breach: Attackers access 5.9 million card details<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The so-called Article 13 provision, otherwise known as the Copyright Directive, &#8220;takes an unprecedented step towards the transformation of the Internet, from an open platform for sharing and innovation, into a tool for the automated surveillance and control of its users,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/deeplinks\/2018\/06\/internet-luminaries-ring-alarm-eu-copyright-filtering-proposal\">an open letter signed by 70 experts<\/a>, who criticized the move.<\/p>\n<p>Chief among the concerns is that the provision will effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/boingboing.net\/2018\/06\/12\/contact-your-mep.html\">ban linking to news articles without prior permission<\/a>, and sift through user posts and submissions in an effort to censor illegal content.<\/p>\n<p>But the protester took matters into his own hands. He began leaving messages on users&#8217; television screens using a web-based feature on the exposed set-top boxes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dear EU citizens, call your [parliamentarian] to stop Article 13 or you&#8217;ll lose the right to share and enjoy memes that you&#8217;ve taken for granted,&#8221; said the message he left in English &#8212; and in other languages.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_ZD_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>There are about 3,100 set-top boxes that aren&#8217;t protected with a password, though he only temporarily defaced the screens of a few television sets.<\/p>\n<p>He also opened <a href=\"https:\/\/curia.europa.eu\/jcms\/jcms\/P_91153\">two accounts<\/a> referenced on the a European Court of Justice web page that had been empty, which he used to tweet opposition to Article 13. He previously made a name for himself for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-43737381\">opening another vacant account<\/a>, linked to from a North Korea-run web page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tech Pro Research: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techproresearch.com\/downloads\/gdpr-security-pack-policies-to-protect-data-and-achieve-compliance\/\" target=\"_blank\">GDPR security pack: Policies to protect data and achieve compliance<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Article 13 threatens the internet ecosystem because it will mandate automated filtering systems to be installed everywhere in the internet,&#8221; he said in a message.
