{"id":27947,"date":"2019-07-18T18:51:20","date_gmt":"2019-07-18T18:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/30322\/US-Senator-Asks-FBI-To-Investigate-FaceApp.html"},"modified":"2019-07-18T18:51:20","modified_gmt":"2019-07-18T18:51:20","slug":"us-senator-asks-fbi-to-investigate-faceapp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/us-senator-asks-fbi-to-investigate-faceapp\/","title":{"rendered":"US Senator Asks FBI To Investigate FaceApp"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width lead\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-image-replace\" alt=\"Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/346E\/production\/_107922431_039390665.jpg\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span> <span class=\"story-image-copyright\">Getty Images<\/span> <\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"off-screen\">Image caption<\/span> <span class=\"media-caption__text\"> Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer says the app is &#8220;deeply troubling&#8221; <\/span> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer has called for an investigation into FaceApp, which alters users&#8217; photos to make them look older or younger.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter posted on Twitter, Mr Schumer called it &#8220;deeply troubling&#8221; that personal data of US citizens could go to a &#8220;hostile foreign power&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Privacy concerns have been raised about the Russian company which developed the app after it went viral in recent days. <\/p>\n<p>FaceApp has previously denied the allegations. <\/p>\n<p>Wireless Lab, a company based in St. Petersburg, says it does not permanently store images, and does not collect troves of data &#8211; only uploading specific photos selected by users for editing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though the core R&amp;D team is located in Russia, the user data is not transferred to Russia,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/07\/17\/faceapp-responds-to-privacy-concerns\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">a company statement reported by news site TechCrunch said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-49018103\" class=\"story-body__link\">Can you trust FaceApp with your face?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mr Schumer however has asked that the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigate FaceApp.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have serious concerns regarding both the protection of the data that is being aggregated as well as whether users are aware of who may have access to it,&#8221; his letter reads.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"> <\/span> <\/figure>\n<p>His calls for a probe comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/07\/17\/faceapp-adds-decades-your-age-fun-popular-russian-owned-app-raises-privacy-concerns\/\" class=\"story-body__link-external\">the Democratic National Committee reportedly warned 2020 presidential candidates and their campaigners not to use the app<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not clear at this point what the privacy risks are, but what is clear is that the benefits of avoiding the app outweigh the risks,&#8221; security officer Bob Lord reportedly told staff.<\/p>\n<p>The company says it has about 80 million active users. <\/p>\n<p>In 2017 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/article\/40887229\/faceapp-launches-blackface-feature-then-deletes-it-after-social-backlash\" class=\"story-body__link\">FaceApp sparked widespread criticism for a feature allowing users to alter someone&#8217;s ethnicity<\/a> in selfies.
