The remaining 16% of attacks targeted consumer email accounts. Burt said some of the 10,000 customers were successfully compromised while others were only targeted, but he didn\u2019t provide figures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis data demonstrates the significant extent to which nation-states continue to rely on cyberattacks as a tool to gain intelligence, influence geopolitics, or achieve other objectives,\u201d Burt wrote. Microsoft presented the figures Wednesday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/aspensecurityforum.org\/agenda\/\">Aspen Security Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Burt said Microsoft has seen \u201cextensive\u201d activity from five specific groups sponsored by Iran, North Korea, and Russia. Microsoft has given one Iranian group the name Holmium, while security firm FireEye&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fireeye.com\/current-threats\/apt-groups.html\">dubs the offenders APT33<\/a>. FireEye said the group targets organizations primarily headquartered in the United States, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. Targets tend to be involved in both military and commercial aviation and petrochemical-focused energy.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft identified another of the five groups as Strontium, a Russian outfit that\u2019s better known as Fancy Bear or APT28. Security firm CrowdStrike has said Fancy Bear has operated since 2008 and is believed to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdstrike.com\/blog\/who-is-fancy-bear\/\">working for the GRU<\/a>, or Russia\u2019s military intelligence service. Fancy Bear was one of two Russian-sponsored groups that <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2016\/06\/hackers-invade-dems-servers-steal-entire-trump-opposition-file\/\">hacked the Democratic National Committee<\/a> ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Strontium has also been linked to intrusions into the <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2016\/09\/anti-doping-agency-pins-leak-of-us-gold-medalists-data-on-russian-hackers\/\">World Anti-Doping Agency<\/a> in 2016, the German Bundestag, and France\u2019s TV5Monde TV station, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>Burt identified the three other nation-sponsored groups as Yttrium (a Russian outfit that Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/security\/blog\/2018\/12\/03\/analysis-of-cyberattack-on-u-s-think-tanks-non-profits-public-sector-by-unidentified-attackers\/\">caught targeting US think tanks and non-governmental organizations<\/a> in December), Iran-based Mercury, and Thallium of North Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Burt also said that, since launching its <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2018\/08\/20\/protecting-democracy-with-microsoft-accountguard\/\">AccountGuard platform for protecting democratic elections<\/a> last August, the company has made 781 notifications of nation-sponsored attacks targeting organizations that make use of the technology. The vast majority of the attacks\u201495 percent, Burt said\u2014were based in the US. He said the figures give a good indication of what to expect in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we head into the 2020 elections,\u201d he said, \u201cgiven both the broad reliance on cyberattacks by nation-states and the use of cyberattacks to specifically target democratic processes, we anticipate that we will see attacks targeting US election systems, political campaigns, or NGOs that work
