{"id":27564,"date":"2019-06-28T15:12:03","date_gmt":"2019-06-28T15:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packetstormsecurity.com\/news\/view\/30270\/AWS-S3-Server-Leaks-Data-From-Fortune-100-Companies-Ford-Netflix-TD-Bank.html"},"modified":"2019-06-28T15:12:03","modified_gmt":"2019-06-28T15:12:03","slug":"aws-s3-server-leaks-data-from-fortune-100-companies-ford-netflix-td-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/aws-s3-server-leaks-data-from-fortune-100-companies-ford-netflix-td-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"AWS S3 Server Leaks Data From Fortune 100 Companies: Ford, Netflix, TD Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Attunity, an Israeli IT firm that provides data management, warehousing, and replication services for the world&#8217;s biggest companies, has exposed some of its customers&#8217; data after it left three Amazon S3 buckets exposed on the internet without a password.<\/p>\n<p>The leaky AWS S3 buckets contained information on Attunity&#8217;s own operations, but also data from some of its customers &#8212; Fortune 100 companies like Ford, Netflix, and TD Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The leaky S3 buckets were found on May 13, and secured three days later, thanks to the work of data breach hunting firm UpGuard.<\/p>\n<p>The exposed information included backups of employees&#8217; OneDrive accounts; email correspondence; system passwords; private keys for production systems; sales and marketing contact information; project specifications; employee personal data; and more.<\/p>\n<p>For example, UpGuard researchers found usernames and passwords for Netflix production database systems, TD Bank invoices for internal software employees were using, and various Ford internal project files.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"img aspect-set\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet2.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/2019\/06\/28\/c41d0f81-4ef9-4db8-9ad9-cb87b22a9025\/5515d8455f40132fdb8a55d468008d80\/attunity-netflix-db-data.png\" class alt=\"Attunity leak: Netflix db credentials\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caption\">Attunity leak: Netflix DB credentials<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"credit\">Image: UpGuard<\/span> <\/p>\n<p>Other information included email correspondence between employees at unnamed companies, containing passwords for work accounts or production systems.<\/p>\n<p>Backup files also contained troves of private keys and passwords for companies&#8217; internal networks.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_ZD_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>Besides Netflix, Attunity itself was one of the companies that had its credentials for internal systems exposed, meaning the leaky S3 server could have served as a springboard for a bigger hack into Attunity&#8217;s network.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;System credentials can be found in a number of places in the Attunity data set and serve as a useful reminder of how that information might be stored in many places across an organization&#8217;s digital assets,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upguard.com\/breaches\/attunity-data-leak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UpGuard researchers said in a report published yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It goes without saying that the leak was massive due to the potential ramifications, providing useful information that could have led to intrusions at some of the world&#8217;s biggest companies. And Attunity has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.attunity.com\/customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a who&#8217;s who list of customers<\/a>, according to its website.<\/p>\n<p>Besides data on companies&#8217; IT systems, the S3 buckets also contained files storing employees&#8217; personal data. Attunity was one of the companies that exposed its employees&#8217; data, UpGuard said.<\/p>\n<p>But UpGuard researchers said this was only scratching the surface in the 1TB sample data they downloaded from the exposed Attunity S3 buckets, and the leaky servers probably contained a lot more.<\/p>\n<p>Qlik, the company who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qlik.com\/us\/products\/attunity-acquisition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently acquired Attunity<\/a>, said it was still investigating the extent of the
