She said that while Australia continues to vehemently oppose the death penalty, Assange\u2019s potential extradition to the US is an issue between the UK and the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"block-elements block-elements--no-byline\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters that the country will not intervene on Assange\u2019s behalf or block his extradition to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Australians travel overseas and find themselves in difficulty with the law, they face the judicial systems of those countries,\u201d Morrison said. implications have been alleviated by how narrowly tailored this indictment is,\u201d Bradley Moss, a national security lawyer in Washington who represents whistleblowers and journalists told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-ecuador-assange-usa-legal-analysis\/assange-hacking-charge-limits-free-speech-defense-legal-experts-idUSKCN1RN2RZ\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"u-underline\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Chesney, a professor of national security law, agrees, explaining that the charge is more closely tied to hacking than to journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Per Reuters:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quoted\">\n<div class=\"quoted__contents\">\n<p>Prosecutors will emphasize that cracking a password is far outside the realm of what respectable journalists do, Chesney at the University of Texas said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018All of this turns on the idea that Assange tries to hack a password,\u2019 Chesney said. \u2018That\u2019s not journalism, that\u2019s Photograph: Yui Mok\/PA<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"block-elements\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>The charges that led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/julian-assange\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"u-underline\">Julian Assange<\/a>\u2019s arrest have nothing to do with the 2016 presidential election or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/trump-russia-inquiry\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"u-underline\">Mueller investigation<\/a> into Donald Trump\u2019s Russian ties, but the extradition case and Assange\u2019s possible arrival in the US will be electrified by all those unresolved issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know nothing about Wikileaks. It\u2019s not my thing,\u201d Donald Trump told reporters asking for a reaction to the arrest. That is not what he said on the campaign, when he frequently praised the organisation that Assange founded, and which arguably played an important role in getting Trump elected.<\/p>\n<p>Assange\u2019s role in 2016 cut like a meat cleaver through the administration, dividing Trump loyalists on the far right \u2013 who see him as a hero persecuted by the \u201cdeep
