{"id":25471,"date":"2019-02-21T11:49:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T11:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/9ebcfe84-e21d-4b08-a3bf-08cf6f4d3250"},"modified":"2019-02-21T11:49:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T11:49:00","slug":"drupal-critical-flaw-patch-this-remote-code-execution-bug-urgently-websites-warned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/drupal-critical-flaw-patch-this-remote-code-execution-bug-urgently-websites-warned\/","title":{"rendered":"Drupal critical flaw: Patch this remote code execution bug urgently, websites warned"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2019\/02\/21\/3bfb85a2-ab2c-4b9d-9272-43848be34aa7\/thumbnail\/770x578\/f5768110a7c1556a5b574e8ca39a9626\/developeristock-966826582.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The Drupal project is urging website admins to install updates immediately after disclosing a highly critical remote code execution bug affecting the Drupal core CMS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"relatedContent alignRight\">\n<h3 class=\"heading\"><span class=\"int\">More security news<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>The bug was considered serious enough for Drupal&#8217;s security team to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drupal.org\/psa-2019-02-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warn admins a day in advance<\/a> of Wednesday&#8217;s patch release to reserve time to address the bug.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Drupal is the third most popular CMS for website publishing, accounting for about three percent of the world&#8217;s billion-plus websites. Hackers could use the flaw, tracked as CVE-2019-6340, to hijack a Drupal site and potentially take control of a web server.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drupal.org\/sa-core-2019-003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to Drupal<\/a>, the bug is due to some file types not properly sanitizing data from non-form sources, such as RESTful web services. This failing can lead to arbitrary PHP code execution, it warns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Until an update to a secure version can be completed, admins can mitigate the bug by disabling all web services modules, according to Drupal&#8217;s advisory. Admins could also mitigate the bug by disallowing PUT\/PATCH\/POST requests to web services resources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Affected branches of Drupal core include Drupal 8.6.x and Drupal 8.5.x and earlier. Admins should immediately upgrade to each branch&#8217;s fixed versions, which are Drupal 8.6.10 and Drupal 8.5.11.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sites are only affected if the Drupal 8 core RESTful Web Services (rest) module is enabled and allows PATCH or POST requests. But given the severity of the bug and the pre-release alert, it would appear the project expects the bug could be exploited in the near future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over recent months, hackers have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/hackers-use-drupalgeddon-2-and-dirty-cow-exploits-to-take-over-web-servers\/?ftag=CMG-01-10aaa1b\">making use of Drupal sites<\/a> that didn&#8217;t install updates to address several &#8216;Drupalgeddon 2&#8217; flaws that were disclosed last spring. The attacks mainly aimed to install cryptocurrency miners on affected web servers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The attackers had plenty of Drupal sites to work with. Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/thousands-of-drupal-sites-still-vulnerable-to-critical-flaw\/\">found over 100,000 sites<\/a> were still running a versions of the CMS vulnerable to Drupalgeddon 2 bugs three months after fixed versions had been released. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Previous and related coverage<\/h3>\n<blockquote readability=\"25.617021276596\">\n<p><a being used to deploy cryptojacking malware<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The update was deemed critical, but users who haven&#8217;t applied the patch are being targeted by attackers deploying cryptocurrency miners.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/around-62-of-all-internet-sites-will-run-an-unsupported-php-version-in-10-weeks\/?ftag=CMG-01-10aaa1b\"><strong>Around 62
