{"id":25408,"date":"2019-02-19T13:24:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T13:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/7fcdca06-4058-4dc9-bd1b-2cddcd803202"},"modified":"2019-02-19T13:24:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T13:24:00","slug":"splunk-pulls-out-of-russia-with-mysterious-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/splunk-pulls-out-of-russia-with-mysterious-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"Splunk pulls out of Russia with mysterious statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2019\/02\/11\/054c0f7d-9f52-4011-93b9-fc194a5c8514\/thumbnail\/770x578\/bf8445ad6c20db16fddfd016cc0914d6\/russia-internet-5c61834560b2b8aa7ec1dd24-1-feb-11-2019-16-00-24-poster.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Cyber-security and data analytics firm Splunk announced on Monday plans to pull out of Russia with a mysterious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splunk.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/18\/shifting-priorities-in-our-global-strategy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post<\/a> that lacked any meaningful information about its decision.<\/p>\n<div class=\"relatedContent alignRight\">\n<h3 class=\"heading\"><span class=\"int\">More security news<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Splunk is continually evaluating where we are investing and focusing our company resources,&#8221; the company said. &#8220;As part of this ongoing evaluation, we have decided Splunk will no longer be selling software and services to organizations in Russia &#8211; either directly or through partners.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The decision applies to all businesses with subsidiaries based in countries outside of Russia whose parent company is in Russia, or who would use the software or services within the Russian territory, Splunk said.<\/p>\n<p>The company plans to honor ongoing contracts, but will not expand or renew existing deals, it also said.<\/p>\n<p>Splunk did not offer a reason for the pullout. A company spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment before this article&#8217;s publication.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s main product is the Splunk Enterprise Security (ES) platform, a security information and event management (SIEM) solution that gathers and analyzes large quantities of machine-generated information points. Splunk&#8217;s main product can provide insights into potential security incidents detected by analyzing data generated by other cyber-security technologies such as network, endpoint, access, malware, vulnerability and identity information services.<\/p>\n<p>Splunk was on a spending spree in 2018, acquiring fellow cyber-security firms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/splunk-buys-security-orchestration-provider-phantom-for-350-million\/\" target=\"_blank\">Phantom Cyber Corporation for $350 million in April<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/splunk-buys-victorops-for-120-million\/\" target=\"_blank\">VictorOps for $120 million in June<\/a>.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_ZD_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>The San Francisco-based company, which was founded in 2003, is now valued at just over $20 billion.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-cyber-russia\/tech-firms-let-russia-probe-software-widely-used-by-u-s-government-idUSKBN1FE1DT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a Reuters report<\/a> revealed that the Russian government had requested access to the source code of several cyber-security and enterprise cloud vendors.<\/p>\n<p>The report said that Symantec, McAfee, HPE, Micro Focus, and SAP honored the Russian government&#8217;s requests.
