The executive order is apparently a symbolic nod to artificial intelligence that doesn\u2019t create any new funding but encourages the federal government to do more with AI. And we can\u2019t help but wonder, what are the odds that President Trump knows anything about what he\u2019s signing today?<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t even mean to be snarky or mean by asking the question. But it\u2019s worth asking given the president\u2019s dangerous incompetence and complete lack of intellectual curiosity. Does President Trump, someone who regularly insists that he knows a lot <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/trump-claims-professional-expertise-when-it-comes-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/trump-claims-professional-expertise-when-it-comes-technology', {metric25:1})\">about technology<\/a> but has used a computer maybe <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/has-donald-trump-ever-used-a-computer-1762376695\" rel=\"nofollow\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'Internal link', 'https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/has-donald-trump-ever-used-a-computer-1762376695', {metric25:1})\">twice in his entire life<\/a>, have any idea what he\u2019s signing later today? Do you think Trump could describe in even the most basic terms what his new American AI Initiative seeks to accomplish? As reported by multiple news outlets, the American AI Initiative is simply a \u201cstrategy\u201d to get the federal government more involved in artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"swappable-mobile-ad-container\" class=\"js_ad-mobile-dynamic swappable-mobile-ad-container js_ad-dynamic ad-mobile-dynamic movable-ad\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit ad-mobile\">\n<div class=\"ad-mobile-inner\">\n<p class=\"ad-label proxima\"><small class=\"proxima\">Advertisement<\/small><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The executive order will seek to \u201credirect\u201d existing funding, but it\u2019s not clear where that funding will be \u201credirected\u201d from. All we know for sure is that it won\u2019t be redirected from billionaires. They already got a huge tax break in one of the largest transfers of wealth from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2019\/02\/heres-why-your-tax-refund-is-lower-this-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'http:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2019\/02\/heres-why-your-tax-refund-is-lower-this-year.html', {metric25:1})\">poor to the rich<\/a> in modern history. If nothing else, the White House seems to have provided plenty of meaningless buzzwords about the AI endeavor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to be developing principles and an agenda with American values in mind,\u201d one anonymous Trump regime official told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-seeks-to-boost-ai-as-chinese-competition-grows-11549861260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-seeks-to-boost-ai-as-chinese-competition-grows-11549861260', {metric25:1})\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>. \u201cThat is something we\u2019re excited to share with the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis executive order is about ensuring continued America leadership in AI, which includes ensuring AI technologies reflect American values, policies, and priorities,\u201d an anonymous official told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/trump-us-ai-strategy-china-8d9ef5a0-7b06-40b1-a853-2182486090da.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https:\/\/www.axios.com\/trump-us-ai-strategy-china-8d9ef5a0-7b06-40b1-a853-2182486090da.html', {metric25:1})\">Axios<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"js_ad-mobile-dynamic js_ad-dynamic ad-mobile-dynamic movable-ad\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit ad-mobile\">\n<div class=\"ad-mobile-inner\">\n<p class=\"ad-label proxima\"><small class=\"proxima\">Advertisement<\/small><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAI is something that touches every aspect of people\u2019s lives. What this initiative attempts to do is to bring all those together under one umbrella and show the promise of this technology for the American people,\u201d an anonymous Trump regime official told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trump-artificialintelligence\/trump-administration-unveils-order-to-prioritize-and-promote-ai-idUSKCN1Q00A3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trump-artificialintelligence\/trump-administration-unveils-order-to-prioritize-and-promote-ai-idUSKCN1Q00A3', {metric25:1})\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What does any of that mean? Your guess is as good as ours. And we expect to hear precisely as much stirring detail about it after President Trump signs the thing later today. What are the odds that Trump\u2019s aides simply said the words \u201cit\u2019s to fight China\u201d and Trump said okay before turning his attention back to Fox News? Pretty good.<\/p>\n<p>If it seems like you\u2019re seeing the news of President Trump\u2019s executive order everywhere this morning, that\u2019s by design. News organizations all hit publish on their stories at midnight, presumably because the White House approached them with a news \u201cembargo.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"js_ad-mobile-dynamic js_ad-dynamic ad-mobile-dynamic movable-ad\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit ad-mobile\">\n<div class=\"ad-mobile-inner\">\n<p class=\"ad-label proxima\"><small class=\"proxima\">Advertisement<\/small><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some of the headlines that news organizations went with overnight:<\/p>\n<p>The stated purpose of a news embargo is to allow news organizations time to talk with experts and get an independent opinion without rushing a story to press. Gizmodo honors embargoes all the time, especially for science coverage. But embargoes are often used for cynical, public relations purposes. And this appears to be a case of the latter. It\u2019s almost as if the White House was able to press \u201cpublish\u201d on half a dozen press releases simultaneously, all while keeping the government sources completely anonymous for some reason.<\/p>\n<div class=\"js_ad-mobile-dynamic js_ad-dynamic ad-mobile-dynamic movable-ad\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit ad-mobile\">\n<div class=\"ad-mobile-inner\">\n<p class=\"ad-label proxima\"><small class=\"proxima\">Advertisement<\/small><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s genuinely strange that the Trump regime is able to get away with this kind of control over news in an environment where they\u2019ve ruined so much. The president has been exposed as arguably the most corrupt politician of the past 100 years as he continues to profit from his position in countless ways and his own lawyer is going to jail for something that the president <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/421175-dem-rep-calls-trump-unindicted-co-conspirator-in-cohen-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/421175-dem-rep-calls-trump-unindicted-co-conspirator-in-cohen-case', {metric25:1})\">instructed him to do<\/a>. Not to mention that President Trump has overseen some of the most barbaric human rights violations on American soil in recent memory through his immigrant family separation policy\u2014something that Trump regime members still insist <a href=\"https:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/muckraker\/matt-whitaker-family-separation-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/muckraker\/matt-whitaker-family-separation-policy', {metric25:1})\">isn\u2019t an actual policy<\/a> despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>Two children have even died in government custody in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/a-second-migrant-child-died-in-u-s-custody-this-month-heres-what-we-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/a-second-migrant-child-died-in-u-s-custody-this-month-heres-what-we-know', {metric25:1})\">recent months<\/a> and countless others are enduring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/news\/congress\/family-separation-blasted-parties-oversight-hearing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https:\/\/www.rollcall.com\/news\/congress\/family-separation-blasted-parties-oversight-hearing', {metric25:1})\">systematic child abuse<\/a> through the country\u2019s concentration camps for asylum seekers. And yet everything is moving along like normal. The White House still issues news embargoes and media organizations still publish what the White House wants them to publish precisely when the White House wants them to publish it.<\/p>\n<p>And to make matters even more strange, congressional talks have apparently broken down and America is headed toward another government shutdown on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/11\/politics\/washington-trump-congress-border-wall-negotiations-shutdown\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" onclick=\"window.ga('send', 'event', 'Embedded Url', 'External link', 'https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/11\/politics\/washington-trump-congress-border-wall-negotiations-shutdown\/index.html', {metric25:1})\">February 15<\/a> over the president\u2019s racist border wall with Mexico.<\/p>\n<div class=\"js_ad-mobile-dynamic js_ad-dynamic ad-mobile-dynamic movable-ad\">\n<div class=\"ad-unit ad-mobile\">\n<div class=\"ad-mobile-inner\">\n<p class=\"ad-label proxima\"><small class=\"proxima\">Advertisement<\/small><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yes, it seems like it\u2019s going to be another of <em>thos<\/em>e weeks.
