{"id":22270,"date":"2018-12-13T23:38:23","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T23:38:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/us-elections-watchdog-says-its-ok-to-spend-surplus-campaign-cash-on-cybersecurity-gear\/"},"modified":"2018-12-13T23:38:23","modified_gmt":"2018-12-13T23:38:23","slug":"us-elections-watchdog-says-its-ok-to-spend-surplus-campaign-cash-on-cybersecurity-gear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/us-elections-watchdog-says-its-ok-to-spend-surplus-campaign-cash-on-cybersecurity-gear\/","title":{"rendered":"US elections watchdog says it&#8217;s OK to spend surplus campaign cash on cybersecurity gear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US Federal Election Commission has officially voted to allow members of Congress to use their campaign funds on cybersecurity protection.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling means that senators and House reps will be able to purchase things like anti-malware subscriptions, two-factor authentication tokens and secure home routers with leftover campaign money after they take office.<\/p>\n<p>The commission on Thursday voted to approve the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/resources\/cms-content\/documents\/mtg_doc_18-46-B.pdf\">draft document<\/a> (PDF) putting the ruling on paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, you may use campaign funds to pay for cybersecurity protection for your personal devices and accounts,&#8221; the FEC said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Such expenses fall within the uses defined as permissible under the Act: ordinary and necessary expenses incurred in connection with the duties of the individual as a holder of federal office.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This after Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wyden.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Wyden-letter-to-FEC-on-member-cybersecurity-with-attachment.pdf\">wrote in<\/a> (PDF) to the commission earlier this year seeking clarification on whether it was legal for him to use his campaign&#8217;s surplus money to make sure he and his staff were secure from outside attackers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2010\/05\/12\/steam2.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"Steam screenshot\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"Vaping California rep Steams over 'unauthorized' expense listings\">Congressman called out for $1,300 video game binge<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2016\/04\/06\/congressman_1300_dollar_video_binge\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Effectively defending against these threats imposes prohibitive costs and should not be the sole personal financial responsibility of members,&#8221; Wyden argued.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling comes ahead of a huge turnover from the 2018 mid-term elections. When the new Congress is sworn in next month, 100 freshmen Reps and 10 Senators will be taking office for their first terms in DC.<\/p>\n<p>While the ruling will create more money to spend on security, experts argue that much more should be done to protect staff from targeted attacks on their accounts and devices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The ruling by the FEC allowing leftover campaign funds to purchase additional cybersecurity detection and protection has kept the conversation about election protection going,&#8221; Obsidian Security CTO Ben Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to ask
