{"id":21987,"date":"2018-12-14T20:51:01","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T20:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/stop-us-if-youve-heard-this-one-facebook-apologizes-for-bug-leaking-private-photos\/"},"modified":"2018-12-14T20:51:01","modified_gmt":"2018-12-14T20:51:01","slug":"stop-us-if-youve-heard-this-one-facebook-apologizes-for-bug-leaking-private-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/stop-us-if-youve-heard-this-one-facebook-apologizes-for-bug-leaking-private-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop us if you&#8217;ve heard this one: Facebook apologizes for bug leaking private photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook on Friday apologized for a bug that may have exposed exposed private photos to third-party apps for the 12 day period from September 13 to September 25, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re sorry this happened,&#8221; said Tomer Bar, Facebook engineering director, in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.facebook.com\/blog\/post\/2018\/12\/14\/notifying-our-developer-ecosystem-about-a-photo-api-bug\/\">blog post<\/a> intended for developers, noting that as many as 6.8 million users and 1,500 apps from by 876 developers may be affected.<\/p>\n<p>Tomer explained that when a Facebook user grants permission for an app to access that individual&#8217;s photos on Facebook, the service should only grant access to photos shared on timelines.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the bug made photos shared elsewhere \u2013 in Marketplace or Facebook Stories \u2013 or uploaded but never posted available to developers&#8217; apps, specifically those that had been approved by Facebook to use the photos API and by users.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook intends to notify affected individuals, so they can check their photo apps for images that shouldn&#8217;t be there. And next week, the company says it will provide developers with a tool to determine which users of their apps may have been affected and to assist with the deletion of images that shouldn&#8217;t be there.<\/p>\n<p>It was only a few days after the period of vulnerability, on September 28, that Facebook said a different bug had exposed as many as 90 million Facebook profiles to hackers, a figure it subsequently <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/10\/12\/hack_of_facebook\/\">revised down to 30 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to that incident, Guy Rosen, VP of product management, apologized.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\"><span>This is getting to be a habit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The social data biz has apologized so often that its serial contrition came up when CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee in April.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing Zuckerberg at the hearing, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/meetings\/IF\/IF00\/20180411\/108090\/HHRG-115-IF00-Transcript-20180411.pdf\">said<\/a>, \u201cYou have a long history of growth and success, but you also have a long list of apologies.&#8221; She then recited a partial litany of his mea culpas over the years:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>&#8220;I apologize for any harm done as a result of my neglect.&#8221; \u2013 Harvard, 2003<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe really messed this one up.\u201d \u2013 Facebook, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/facebook\/an-open-letter-from-mark-zuckerberg\/2208562130\/\">2006<\/a><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;We simply did a bad job [with this release, and] I apologize for it.&#8221; \u2013 Facebook, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080216182309\/http:\/\/blog.facebook.com\/blog.php?post=7584397130\">2007<\/a><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Sometimes we move too fast\u2026&#8221; \u2013 Facebook, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/05\/23\/AR2010052303828.html\">2010<\/a><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m the first to admit we made a bunch of mistakes.&#8221; \u2013 Facebook, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111230133957\/http:\/\/blog.facebook.com\/blog.php?post=10150378701937131\">2011<\/a><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;[For those I hurt this year,] I ask forgiveness and I will try to be better.&#8221; Facebook, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10104074437830721?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosam&amp;stream=top-stories\">2017<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Schakowsky concluded from this that Facebook&#8217;s self-regulation doesn&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p>Legislative regulation may not be working either. Facebook in April, shortly after Zuckerberg&#8217;s Congressional testimony, made much of its effort to comply with Europe&#8217;s GDPR privacy regime.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As soon as GDPR was finalized, we realized it was an opportunity to invest even more heavily in privacy,&#8221; said Erin Egan, veep and chief privacy officer of policy, and Ashlie Beringer, veep and deputy general counsel in a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/04\/new-privacy-protections\/\">blog post<\/a> at the time. &#8220;We not only want to comply with the law, but also go beyond our obligations to build new and improved privacy experiences for everyone on Facebook.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" response to complaints, the Irish Data Protection Commission has begun an investigation of the company&#8217;s privacy practices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Irish DPC has received a number of breach notifications from Facebook since the introduction of the GDPR on May 25, 2018,&#8221; spokesperson for the watchdog said on Friday in an email to <em>The Register<\/em>. &#8220;With reference to these data breaches, including the breach in question, we have this week commenced a statutory inquiry examining Facebook\u2019s compliance with the relevant provisions of the GDPR.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Coming shortly after the British Parliament published <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/12\/05\/facebook_email_leak\/\">a trove of Facebook emails<\/a> about how the ad biz monetizes its user data, the investigation isn&#8217;t all that surprising.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Register<\/em> asked Facebook how users of the ad network should interpret the photo bug in light of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zuck\/posts\/10104712037900071\">CEO Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s apology<\/a> following the Cambridge Analytica scandal: &#8220;We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can&#8217;t then we don&#8217;t deserve to serve you. &#8220;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve not heard back. \u00ae<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\"><span>Updated to add<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After this story was filed, a Facebook spokesperson said via email, \u201cWe are in close contact with the Irish Data
