{"id":20913,"date":"2018-12-04T07:01:04","date_gmt":"2018-12-04T07:01:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/yet-another-mega-leak-100-million-quora-accounts-compromised-by-system-invaders\/"},"modified":"2018-12-04T07:01:04","modified_gmt":"2018-12-04T07:01:04","slug":"yet-another-mega-leak-100-million-quora-accounts-compromised-by-system-invaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/yet-another-mega-leak-100-million-quora-accounts-compromised-by-system-invaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Yet another mega-leak: 100 million Quora accounts compromised by system invaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Someone&#8217;s taken a wander through the systems of question-and-answer website Quora, pilfering account details of 100 million users.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.quora.com\/Quora-Security-Update?share=1\">announced<\/a> on Monday this week: \u201cOn Friday we discovered that some user data was compromised by a third party who gained unauthorized access to one of our systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It said it has \u201ctaken steps to contain the incident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Breached data includes account information, public content and actions (such as comments, upvotes and actions), and non-public actions (answer requests, downvotes, and direct messages, the latter used by only \u201ca small percentage\u201d of users).<\/p>\n<p>The account data involved included user IDs, email addresses, and (it&#8217;s good to report, for once \u2013 <em>El Reg<\/em>) fully encrypted passwords. Quora&#8217;s post said it will log out all affected users, and push a password reset.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2018\/04\/12\/credit_card_shutterstock.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"credit card\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"If you shopped with 'em since March 2017, consider your deets in the haul\">Magecart fiends punch card-skimming code in Sotheby&#8217;s Home website<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/11\/30\/magecart_fiends_strike_sothebys_home_website\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>For everyone else, there&#8217;s this advice: \u201cWhile the passwords were encrypted (hashed with a salt that varies for each user), it is generally a best practice not to reuse the same password across multiple services, and we recommend that people change their passwords if they are doing so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The breached also included \u201cdata imported from linked networks,\u201d if a user had given permission for that to be done from their account.<\/p>\n<p>The post doesn&#8217;t stipulate what information might come from linked accounts, but it&#8217;s explained in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/about\/privacy\">privacy policy<\/a>. If you&#8217;ve used Google or Facebook to log in, or you&#8217;ve connected your Quora account with Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, \u201cwe receive certain profile and account information about you from the Linked Network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So it looks to <em>The Register<\/em> there&#8217;s a risk that someone using their real name on Quora, but not on Twitter, could be doxxed as part of this leak.<\/p>\n<p>Quora believes it&#8217;s \u201cidentified the root cause and taken steps to address the issue\u201d, an outside organisation is assisting, and law enforcement has been notified.
