{"id":1869,"date":"2018-05-29T21:15:12","date_gmt":"2018-05-29T21:15:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kasperskycontenthub.com\/threatpost\/?p=132350"},"modified":"2018-05-29T21:15:12","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T21:15:12","slug":"fraudsters-claim-to-hack-two-canadian-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/fraudsters-claim-to-hack-two-canadian-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"Fraudsters Claim To Hack Two Canadian Banks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"media_block\"><\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskycontenthub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2018\/05\/29143657\/bank-e1527619033664.jpeg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Two Canadian banks have reported that they may be targets of a hack, after bad actors claimed that they electronically accessed personal and account information.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, both Bank of Montreal and Simplii Financial (the banking subsidiary of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) announced that \u201cfraudsters\u201d contacted them over the weekend\u00a0claiming they had accessed certain personal and financial data from customers.<\/p>\n<p>BMO said that a limited number of customers were impacted: \u201cWe took steps immediately when the incident occurred and we are confident that exposures identified related to customer data have been closed off,\u201d the company said in a statement. \u201cWe have notified and are working with relevant authorities as we continue to assess the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bank, which has 7 million customers overall, added that it believes the bad actors originated the attack from outside the country.<\/p>\n<p>Simplii meanwhile said that approximately 40,000 customers may be impacted. The company added that there is currently no indication that clients who bank through CIBC have been affected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately upon learning of the potential issue, Simplii began investigating to understand the claim and verify its accuracy,\u201d Simplii said in a statement. \u201cWe also moved quickly to implement enhanced online fraud monitoring and online banking security measures. In addition, Simplii will be reaching out to clients proactively through all channels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simplii told customers in a tweet it would \u201censure that 100% all money lost [sic]\u2026 will be returned.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019re assessing all potential impacts. If a client is a victim of fraud bcuz of this issue, we will ensure that 100% all money lost in an affected account is returned. If ur account was affected by this issue, we will reimburse u for 1 year of credit monitoring. ^Julie<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Simplii Financial (@SimpliiFin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SimpliiFin\/status\/1001501717215809536?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 29, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Neither bank responded to multiple emails from Threatpost inquiring about any links between the two breaches; nor whether any money was stolen from customers\u2019 accounts.<\/p>\n<p>James Lerud, head of the Verodin Behavioral Research Team, said the incident appears to be an extortion attempt by the hackers, where they threaten to publish stolen data unless they receive a ransom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to say what the motivation for demanding the ransom is,\u201d he said. \u201cIt could be that the data stolen isn\u2019t as valuable as they are making out to be, or if the hackers are looking for a cherry on top of their haul and would just use the stolen information after a ransom was paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tim Erlin, vice president of product management and strategy at Tripwire, told Threatpost that attackers generally target banks because, put simply, that\u2019s where the money is.\u00a0\u201cUltimately, the biggest threat is the loss of money, but the mechanisms by which an attacker might execute such an attack can vary,\u201d Erlin told Threatpost. \u201cThere\u2019s no single, biggest threat for banks to address outside of complexity.
