{"id":1738,"date":"2018-05-29T01:01:41","date_gmt":"2018-05-29T01:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/fbi-to-worlddog-please-try-turning-it-off-and-turning-it-back-on\/"},"modified":"2018-05-29T01:01:41","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T01:01:41","slug":"fbi-to-worlddog-please-try-turning-it-off-and-turning-it-back-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/fbi-to-worlddog-please-try-turning-it-off-and-turning-it-back-on\/","title":{"rendered":"FBI to World+Dog: <i>Please<\/i>, try turning it off and turning it back on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The FBI has reminded the world it wants us to reboot our routers to try and help it identify VPNFilter-affected routers.<\/p>\n<p>It first asked for reboots last Wednesday, May 23, in the Department of Justice VPNFilter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-announces-actions-disrupt-advanced-persistent-threat-28-botnet-infected\">media release<\/a>, but on Friday added a stand-alone <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/media\/2018\/180525.aspx\">public service announcement<\/a> emphasising its &#8220;IT Crowd&#8221; strategy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"promo_article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/regmedia.co.uk\/2017\/11\/08\/fbi_shutterstock.jpg?x=174&amp;y=115&amp;crop=1\" width=\"174\" height=\"115\" alt=\"FBI\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 title=\"Feds warn admins malware is rather tough to destroy\">FBI agents take aim at VPNFilter botnet, point finger at Russia, yell &#8216;national security threat&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/05\/24\/fbi_vpnfilter_botnet\/\"><span>READ MORE<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Last week, Cisco Talos researchers announced the malware had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/05\/23\/vpnfilter_malware_menacing_routers_worldwide\/\">infected around 500,000 home and small office routers<\/a> and NAS devices. The company listed routers from Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear, and TP-Link, and QNAP storage systems, as targets of VPNFilter.<\/p>\n<p>Talos noted that the malware was trying to target machines in the Ukraine, and the FBI attributed the attacks to the group known as \u201cSofacy\u201d or \u201cFancy Bear\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2018\/05\/24\/fbi_vpnfilter_botnet\/\">the FBI revealed<\/a> it had seized a domain associated with the campaign, giving it the chance to drop malware traffic into a sinkhole.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI said it would gather the IP addresses of infected devices, and pass those to the Shadowserver Foundation to disseminate among ISPs and non-US CERTs.<\/p>\n<p>As we noted last Thursday, a reboot only removes part of the infection: the infected device will still try to contact command and control servers.<\/p>\n<p>As at May 25, the date of the public service announcement, the FBI stills said the infection vector was unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Vendor responses to VPNFilter so far include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Netgear <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kb.netgear.com\/000058814\/Security-Advisory-for-VPNFilter-Malware-on-Some-Routers\">said<\/a> users should install the latest firmware for their devices, change the default admin password, and turn off remote management;<\/li>\n<li>MikroTik <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/forum.mikrotik.com\/viewtopic.php?f=21&amp;t=134776&amp;sid=e1317ac312b35b2f791df77e6d9a6404\">said<\/a> the March 2017 version of its operating system disables the malware, and provided instructions about securing its devices;<\/li>\n<li>QNAP <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.qnap.com\/en\/security-advisory\/NAS-201805-24\">said<\/a> suitable firmware has existed since last year, and reminded users to change the default admin password; and<\/li>\n<li>TP-Link <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tp-link.com\/us\/faq-2212.html\">said<\/a> VPNFilter only affected its TP-R600VPN router, and linked users to firmware and security instructions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As we noted in last week&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\"
