Hackers complained it was too little, and why should they have to buy the wallet. It increased to $250,000. No takers. I&#8217;m now offering $20 mil to one fraudulent hacker &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cybergibbons?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">@cybergibbons<\/a> He refused.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John McAfee (@officialmcafee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/officialmcafee\/status\/1035980830957613057?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">September 1, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A month ago, McAfee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/3294619\/security\/bounty-for-hacking-the-unhackable-bitfi-wallet-jumps-from-100k-to-250k.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">upped the bounty<\/a> for hacking the \u201cunhackable\u201d wallet from $100,000 to $250,000. That bounty, which many in the security community deemed a sham, specified that a hack counted only if someone got the coins off the \u201ccut-down Android phone\u201d wallet. Bitfi refused to pay researchers who did <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProfWoodward\/status\/1025785045913686021\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">hack the device<\/a>, claiming the attacks didn\u2019t meet the bounty conditions. It wasn\u2019t horribly surprising that Bitfit <a href=\"https:\/\/pwnies.com\/winners\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">won the PwnieAward<\/a> for \u201cLamest Vendor Response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Security researchers such as Pen Test Partners\u2019 Andrew Tierney kept finding <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cybergibbons\/status\/1028987435873648640\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">ways to hack<\/a> Bitfi, and Bitfi kept finding <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ryancdotorg\/status\/1035472098637094913\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">ways to deny<\/a> them the promised bounty payout.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone\" id=\"\"\/>\n<aside class=\"fakesidebar\">[ Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/3299636\/hacking\/microsoft-disrupted-russian-hacking-campaign-aimed-at-us-midterm-elections.html\">Microsoft disrupted Russian hacking campaign aimed at US midterm elections<\/a> | Stay up to date: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/newsletters\/signup.html\">Sign up for CSO newsletters<\/a>\u00a0]<\/aside>\n<h2>The latest Bitfi hack<\/h2>\n<p>The newest hack of Bitfi, a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spudowiar\/status\/1035269363903946755\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">cold boot attack<\/a>, was pulled off by 15-year-old Saleem Rashid, who previously turn Bitfi into a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AbeSnowman\/status\/1027377982497861632\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Doom gaming console<\/a>. Rashid is part of a team of security researchers going by \u201cTHCMKACGASSCO.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-cards=\"hidden\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bitfi6?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">@Bitfi6<\/a> being cold boot attacked by an Android phone. the actual attack takes mere seconds. trivial to Evil Maid it while you&#8217;re not looking.<\/p>\n<p>the RAM analysis takes over 2 minutes on my phone (only 1GB RAM), but we can dump RAM in 40 seconds \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>appropriate \ud83c\udfb6 as always <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uNL5cLlSi6\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/uNL5cLlSi6<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u2014 Saleem &#8220;Unhackable&#8221; Rashid (@spudowiar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spudowiar\/status\/1035937027697635333?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">September 1, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite Bitfi having been hammered and exploited many times, Bitfi finally backed off its \u201cunhackable\u201d claim shortly after Rashid posted video proof of the hack on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Bitfi issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bitfi6\/status\/1035279307617259523\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> that it would remove the \u201cunhackable\u201d claim from its branding as it \u201ccaused a significant amount of controversy.\u201d The company didn\u2019t stop there; it hired \u201can experienced Security Manager, who is confirming vulnerabilities that have been identified by researchers.\u201d After confirmation, the flaws are allegedly to be publicly announced and addressed.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"fsb-2599\" class=\"fakesidebar fakesidebar-auto fakesidebar-sponsored\"><strong>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/pluralsight.pxf.io\/c\/321564\/424552\/7490?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pluralsight.com%2Fpaths%2Fcertified-information-systems-security-professional-cisspr\" rel=\"nofollow\">Prepare to become a Certified Information Security Systems Professional with this comprehensive online course from PluralSight. Now offering a 10-day free trial!<\/a> ]<\/strong><\/aside>\n<p>Additionally, Bitfi closed the \u201ccurrent bounty programs that have caused understandable anger and frustration among researchers.\u201d It further claimed that a \u201cconventional bounty program\u201d would be launched via Hacker One.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<p>Despite that promise, Hacker One CEO M\u00e5rten Mickos said Bitfi had not yet initiated any communication about launching a bounty program.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">BitFi has not been in touch with us &amp; there is no conversation going on. He zeroed in on Tierney, aka <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cybergibbons\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">@cybergibbons<\/a>, taunting him to accept a $20 million challenge to hack McAfee\u2019s Bitfi wallet. The <a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/DmBNkSyV4AA0rp6.jpg\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">strings attached<\/a> seem pretty creepy: McAfee said he would pay Tierney\u2019s way to the United States where Tierney would stay at McAfee\u2019s house. If Tierney can get the $20 million in cryptocurrency off McAfee\u2019s Bitfi wallet, then the money is his. McAfee claims Tierney won\u2019t accept, since \u201cBitfi is unhackable.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">To the gentleman who claims to have Hacked the BitFi wallet: I say he is a publicity hound who is all talk.
