{"id":10669,"date":"2018-08-24T10:22:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-24T10:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/e5e90fd2-47be-4528-bdbb-a9d6669461c4"},"modified":"2018-08-24T10:22:00","modified_gmt":"2018-08-24T10:22:00","slug":"intel-ditches-linux-patch-benchmark-gag-offers-innocuous-new-license","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threatshub.org\/blog\/intel-ditches-linux-patch-benchmark-gag-offers-innocuous-new-license\/","title":{"rendered":"Intel ditches Linux patch benchmark &#8216;gag&#8217;, offers &#8216;innocuous&#8217; new license"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zdnet3.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2018\/02\/28\/87ecd47b-1890-4da6-a5dc-82077e7fbbd7\/thumbnail\/770x578\/e7f797204d32e2b809383e82b06a6a74\/intelsignage.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"\/><\/div>\n<div class=\"relatedContent alignRight\">\n<h3 class=\"heading\"><span class=\"int\">Meltdown-Spectre<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>Intel has ditched a controversial licensing agreement that appeared aimed at legally preventing developers from publishing benchmark results that could reveal performance slowdowns caused by its recent security patches.<\/p>\n<p>As ZDNet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/intel-gags-linux-distros-from-revealing-performance-hit-from-spectre-patches\/\">reported yesterday<\/a>, the chip maker was <a href=\"https:\/\/perens.com\/2018\/08\/22\/new-intel-microcode-license-restriction-is-not-acceptable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criticized by open-source champion Bruce Perens<\/a> for slipping new restrictions into the software agreement for maintainers of Linux distributions such as Debian and Ubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>The changes in license terms came with microcode updates to mitigate Spectre and Foreshadow, or L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF), speculative attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement stated: &#8220;You will not, and will not allow any third party to &#8230; publish or provide any software benchmark or comparison test results.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The phrase suggested that someone at Intel, perhaps lawyers or marketing officials, really didn&#8217;t want anyone to publish benchmark results that contradicted its own tests for L1TF mitigations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/topic\/sensord-enterprise-iot-ml-and-big-data\/\"><strong>Sensor&#8217;d enterprise: IoT, ML, and big data<\/strong><\/a> <strong>(ZDNet special report) |<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/resource-library\/whitepapers\/special-report-iot-and-the-sensor-d-enterprise-free-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Download the report as a PDF<\/strong><\/a> <strong>(TechRepublic)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Intel disclosed the L1TF vulnerability, it said it had observed &#8220;no meaningful performance impact&#8221; after its mitigations had been applied.<\/p>\n<section class=\"sharethrough-top\" data-component=\"medusaContentRecommendation\" data-medusa-content-recommendation-options=\"{&quot;promo&quot;:&quot;promo_ZD_recommendation_sharethrough_top_in_article_desktop&quot;,&quot;spot&quot;:&quot;dfp-in-article&quot;}\">\n<\/section>\n<p>There have been concerns since Intel released its first microcode mitigations for Spectre that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/google-our-brilliant-spectre-fix-dodges-performance-hit-so-you-should-all-use-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">do cause significant slowdowns in performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But even if they do, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/bruce-perens-lashes-out-at-absurdity-and-injustice-in-software-patents-process\/\" target=\"_blank\">Perens<\/a> thought gagging developers would undermine trust in Intel&#8217;s components.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Silencing free speech by those who would merely publish benchmarks? Bad business.
